Street Trading covers a wide range of outdoor retail and catering activities undertaken in public streets. It includes flower sellers, ice-cream vendors, fancy goods, souvenir stalls and a variety of hot and cold catering activities such as burger vans. Before we progress any further, we want to hear from residents, businesses, traders and other stakeholders through our short online survey. 🍖 Reminders of our foundations Commerce and trading are (nearly) as old as the world. The City of London flourished thanks to commerce, and trading is still a major activity. Whether it's in banking towers, niche services, or shops, #london does it very well. Maybe a little less well with #brexit at the moment, but I'm sure that will pass. What a surprise for me to learn that Smithfield's Market in central London is due to end its meat trading activity by 2028. This amazing market building is one I walked through every day to work, and served as a poignant reminder of the strength of trading in the capital. By the nature of its goods, it was the ideal backdrop to more modern commerce in the vicinity, a visual way of remembering the foundations of many businesses today. It will go the way of Billingsgate fish market and be relocated far away. I know others will be pleased to see such a "distasteful relic of the past" be moved out. I do nonetheless look on the bright side, namely that the building itself will be re-used and not destroyed. Oxford Street revival to ‘peak’ next year as West End recovers from candy store scourge. Over the last year, the popular tourist and shopping destination has been repairing its reputation after a slew of illicit American candy stores infested vacant properties when retailers exited the street during the pandemic. And this tendency is about to grow in 2024. Westminster City Council cooperates with businesses to make the iconic location look better. Credit for the resurrection of Oxford Street belongs to the 40 per cent cut in business rates which was introduced by the government over Covid – however, this measure has since been reduced to only serve smaller businesses. Despite fears that shoppers are steering clear of spending due to the cost of living squeeze, new figures show that the Christmas period has managed to drag customers back to the high street. The Landlord and Tenant Act 1954 (LTA 1954). 💡 This year the LTA 1954 is set to be in the spotlight with the publication of the Law Commission’s review due in Autumn 2024.
