The federal government has invested $20.7 million in the “Joe Louis Meets the Iron Belle: Connecting Communities in Detroit” project. The funding will enhance and expand the Joe Louis Greenway Partnership (JLGP) and Iron Belle Trail (IBT) in Detroit. The project aims to create a vibrant and accessible greenway for everyone to enjoy, with the City of Detroit partners, and the community working together to bring this vision to life. The Joe Louis Meets the Iron Belle project is one of three Michigan projects awarded grants from the #RAISE program, part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda. The greenway’s design prioritizes environmental sustainability. Landscaping efforts will create green spaces that support local biodiversity and offer urban oases for residents, with a focus on native plants and trees to enhance the area’s ecological health.
