40 years ago, on 4th September 1984, I started at Barclays, Altrincham. After working across the country for many years, in too many roles to mention, I have ended up back in Manchester. So what have I learned in 40 years? 1. You learn more from your mistakes, than your successes. And I have had plenty. But that is where I have learned the most. It’s all about the ‘scars on your back’. 2. Concentrate on what you are good at. For years I have had different development plans looking at where I can improve. It was a waste of time. Spend your time trying to be great at something. Anything. 3. What ever your role, be enthusiastic and infectious. If your job is about producing data, talking to clients or giving presentations. Be memorable, be different. 40 years goes quickly. Enjoy it.

It was my pleasure representing IGEN alongside my peers at the LEAD x IGEN Southside Takeover… I really enjoyed myself! I appreciated meeting representatives from various lines of business. It provided valuable insights and helped me build meaningful connections that I definitely will be carrying on! Note to GEN Z: We know It can be intimidating at first, but during my time at the bank, I've been able to refine my career goals by understanding my purpose and leveraging connections to enhance my knowledge and objectives. Don't hesitate to put yourself out there! Understand your goals and actively pursue what you want… The sky is the limit at Bank of America I say that to say… ⭐️ Join employee networks to expand your connections and opportunities! ⭐️Be sure to keep an eye out for event-related emails. ⭐️ Understanding your purpose is key, as it guides the path to your career. ⭐️ Recognize that you belong and are exactly where you deserve to be! ⭐️ Ensure you put action and effort behind your goals. Things that come easily can also go easily. Remember, nothing worth having comes quickly… Make sure you are utilizing all your tools and resources to support your purpose and plan! ⭐️When people think of you, what comes to mind? —— Support your plan with strong performance. Your brand is everything! Never tell yourself No!

Can you pinpoint when your career took off? Have you ever said "thank you" to the manager that helped make that happen? Shall we try, for a moment? Our managers throughout our career have the ability to make or break our progression. We have to trust them, and despite whatever they are going through personally and professionally, they have to continually show up for us with our best interests at heart. I can pinpoint the moment my fortunes changed, and that was thanks to Claudia Kendal c.2009/10. I was a cog in the wheel at Barclays and asked for her experienced view on what I can do to stand out, what my move could be, my edge. I distinctly remember the conversation at our desks. "Go after social media, it's what everyone wants". She was right. And she gave it to me. On a plate. She could've taken it herself, but she didn't, she handed it to someone in her team and gave me a way to find my (career) fame. Total unwaivering support to lead. From there I got promoted at 26 to run a team and build the first social media department at Barclays. And on my story went. I have never really thanked or replayed this moment to her before, but I've never forgotten it. And I've tried to Pay it Forward a number of times since. So, thank you Claudia, for that simple gesture, and being such a supportive manager when I was so young.
