Congratulations to Elias R. Ruiz-Morales, PhD Student at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, who has been awarded a prestigious IBSA Foundation for scientific research Fellowship! 🎉 He won the Fellowship to investigate how the human placenta responds to malaria infection. 🧬🦟 The international award from the IBSA Foundation, based in Switzerland, is designed to support talented young researchers in projects that could change the future of medicine. Elias was one of 248 applicants to the scheme from 47 countries. Elias said: “Institutions like the IBSA Foundation play a crucial role in shaping the future of science by supporting early-career researchers. These fellowships not only back innovative research that aim to have a positive impact in society, but also help researchers like me to build our careers.” “My project investigates how infections impact the placenta and cause pregnancy complications. These infections can lead to miscarriages and developmental conditions, and are a major global health problem that affect millions of people around the world.” Find out more at https://lnkd.in/enwVEMSD

Vanderbilt researchers recently reported that pyridostigmine (Mestinon) is better able to increase blood pressure in autonomic failure/OH patients who have residual peripheral sympathetic nerve activity, and it doesn’t work as well in patients with autonomic failure who have more severe supine hypertension and more severe peripheral autonomic neuropathies. This information can help doctors target their treatment recommendations based on the patient’s individual situation. This research was presented as a conference abstract, but the journal charges a fee to read the abstract, which is why we are providing a free summary of the key points. The board of directors of the OPTN established the Expeditious Task Force in September 2023 to study and make recommendations on ways to increase the number of donated organs used for transplant and to increase the efficiency of the organ placement process. This is in keeping with federal regulation that directs the OPTN to “seek to achieve the best use of donated organs” and “promote the efficient management of organ placement.” Discover more about this initiative here: https://lnkd.in/eZ7tDY-9

🔥World Arthritis Day 2023 – Wereld Reuma Dag 2023🔥: a global awareness day held every year on October 12th which aims to increase the knowledge of the existence and impact of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMD) worldwide. ✔In the EU alone, too many people with RMDs remain undiagnosed or are diagnosed lately. RMDs are estimated to affect 120 million people, many of whom are trying to cope with often overlooked and frequently misdiagnosed symptoms. ✔In this way, their quality of life is negatively impacted, large healthcare costs are induced and participation in society is reduced, including access to work, but without an effective solution. Luckily, that is where the 🔥King Baudouin Foundation🔥 kicks in where philanthropy supports health research in rheumatic diseases via a specific fund. ✔Our research group, led by prof. dr. Lennart Jans at the Ghent University Hospital, has been awarded one of the laureate prizes for the year 2022 to help tackle these societal problems of underdiagnosis and late diagnosis in rheumatic diseases as part of my PhD research. ✔With this funding, we will further develop our artificial intelligence algorithms to opportunistically screen routine medical imaging of patients for the presence of rheumatic diseases. 🔬 Philanthropy supports health research! In 2022, more than 6 million euros were allocated to health research projects thanks to numerous dedicated Funds, managed by the King Baudouin Foundation. These projects, led by brilliant minds from Belgian universities and institutions, cover a wide range of medical fields, but all share a common feature: none of them would have seen the light of day without the help of philanthropists who are committed to improve patients' lives. 💪 This Thursday October 5, we were honoured to celebrate the outstanding prizewinners during a ceremony held in the presence of Princess Astrid. Funds dedicated to health research are generally created on the initiative of philanthropists, who are convinced of the importance of such research for society, but also sometimes because they themselves have been faced with illness. The Funds cover a wide range of pathologies, including cancer, dementia, rare illnesses, rheumatology, cardiology, diabetes and ophthalmology. This philanthropic support is often the indispensable point of departure for an innovative project, or an essential complement to support provided by the government or industry. 🩺💖 We wish them all the best and thank them for their contribution for health research 🔬 #KingBaudouinFoundation #HealthResearch #Medicalinnovation #Philanthropy #ScientificBreakthroughs Gerrit Rauws Michèle Duesberg 📷 © Frank Toussaint

Title: $1 Billion Donation to Albert Einstein's College of Medicine - A Transformative Gift On July 13th, 2024, the Albert Einstein's College of Medicine announced a historic $1 billion donation from philanthropist Ruth Gottesman. This transformative gift is the largest single donation ever received by the institution and will have a profound impact on its ability to advance medical research, education, and patient care. The donation from Ms. Gottesman, a longtime supporter of the college, will fund critical initiatives across the institution, including: - Establishing new research centers and laboratories to drive breakthroughs in fields like cancer, neuroscience, and infectious disease - Expanding scholarship programs to attract and support the next generation of medical leaders and innovators - Upgrading campus facilities and infrastructure to provide state-of-the-art resources for students, faculty, and researchers "This historic gift from Ruth Gottesman will propel Einstein to new heights, allowing us to accelerate discoveries, train the physicians and scientists of tomorrow, and deliver the highest quality care to our patients," said Dr. Gordon Tomaselli, Dean of the Albert Einstein's College of Medicine. "We are deeply grateful for her visionary philanthropy and steadfast commitment to our mission." This donation serves as an inspiring example of the impact that philanthropic giving can have on advancing medical knowledge and improving lives. We call on other African and Nigerian billionaires to follow in Ms. Gottesman's footsteps and consider making transformative investments in medical research and education institutions across the continent. Your support can help unlock new breakthroughs, train the next generation of healthcare leaders, and ultimately, save and improve millions of lives. video credit: abc world news #MedicalResearch #MedicalEducation #PhilanthropicImpact #AfricanBillionaires #NigerianBillionaires #TransformativeGift #MedicalBreakthroughs #HealthcareLeaders #SaveLives #ImproveLives #AlbertEinsteinCollege #MedicalPhilanthropy
