We are thrilled to announce that the U.S.- Israel Binational Science Foundation (BSF) has allocated $19.46 million in 2024 to fuel groundbreaking U.S.-Israel collaborative research! In response to this year's challenges, our grant budget was increased by 50%, allowing us to support 94 new projects - a significant expansion. This funding will not only sustain ongoing partnerships but also launch a new wave of innovative projects across diverse fields, including biomedical engineering, life sciences, medicine, and psychobiology. These new grants contribute to BSF’s rich history of supporting over 5,400 projects and investing $700 million in scientific advancements since its inception more than 50 years ago. From pioneering rigorous basic research to fostering meaningful and long-lasting U.S.-Israel collaborations, BSF continues to empower scientists in both nations to make transformative discoveries. With an impressive overall success rate of 28%, we're proud to support both emerging talents and seasoned researchers in expanding the boundaries of knowledge. The year 2024 is starting off strong. BSF is thrilled to share the news that our latest funding cycle has set the stage for an exciting period ahead of collaborative research. With over 330 applications involving nearly 800 scientists from both the U.S. and Israel, we’re witnessing an uptick in interest compared to our previous cycle, spanning the fields of Medicine, Life Sciences, Biomedical Engineering and Psychobiology. Notably, more applications than usual have been initiated by U.S. Principal Investigators, highlighting a growing engagement from our American counterparts. These binational proposals, to be evaluated by 18 expert panels, are a testament to the robust relationship between U.S. and Israeli researchers and underscore a shared commitment to pursue scientific discovery collaboratively - BSF’s core mission for over five decades. The Vilcek Foundation invites foreign-born scientists living and working in the United States to apply for one of three $50,000 Vilcek Prizes for Creative Promise by June 10, 2024. ✅ The prizes will be awarded to early- and mid-career principal investigators in 2025. As of Monday 24 June, UCL’s institutional repository, UCL Discovery, has reached an incredible milestone of 50 million downloads! 🔦 UCL Discovery serves as our open access repository, showcasing a diverse range of research outputs across all disciplines. Currently hosting over 178,500 open access publications, the platform includes a variety of resources such as doctoral theses, research master’s works, and books published by UCL Press. This rich collection underscores our commitment to advancing knowledge, openness and accessibility in academia. 💡 The 50 millionth download was of the paper "Replenishing IRAK-M expression in retinal pigment epithelium attenuates outer retinal degeneration," published in Science Translational Medicine. This research highlights how increasing a key protein's levels could potentially protect against age-related macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss among older adults. 🚀 Congratulations to everyone involved in achieving this remarkable milestone! The 23rd IRCMS Symposium "Kumamoto University-National Taiwan University Joint Symposium on Biomedical Research" was held on July 25th, 2024, at #IRCMS, Kumamoto University. The symposium aimed to foster potential research collaborations between Kumamoto University and National Taiwan University, focusing particularly on the integration of biomedical research with cutting-edge technologies such as #AI and #semiconductors. This event brought together researchers and experts from both institutions, providing a platform for the exchange of ideas and the exploration of innovative approaches in the biomedical field. 🇹🇼 🇯🇵🤝 The symposium started with opening remarks by Dr. Hitoshi Takizawa of IRCMS. It was organized into two sessions, featuring insightful presentations by four distinguished researchers from National Taiwan University (NTU). Dr. Hitoshi Takizawa, Dr. Yuichiro Arima, Dr. Goro Sashida, Dr. Yuta Takahashi, Dr. Rieko Asai, and Dr. Norika Liu from Kumamoto University participated in the symposium and delivered research presentations. Each speaker presented cutting-edge research projects, and participants actively discussed their ongoing projects and future research collaborations throughout the symposium. Following the presentations, a roundtable discussion took place with participants including Dr. Hitoshi Takizawa (KU-IRCMS), Dr. Tomohiro Sawa (KU-School of Medicine), Dr. Akira Nakamura (KU-IMEG), Dr. Toru Takeo (KU-CARD), Dr. Takeshi Momose (KU-REISI), Dr. Ruby Huang (NTU-School of Medicine), Dr. Guojun Sheng (KU-IRCMNS) and Dr. Yen-Hsuan Ni (NTU-College of Medicine). The roundtable focused on two main topics: Topic 1: Promoting collaboration in traditional biomedical research, and Topic 2: Promoting collaboration in fusion research (with semiconductor and other technologies). #InTheNews: Prof Michael Meaney, Director of the Translational Neuroscience programme at the A*STAR Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences (SICS), was recently elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences 🙌 Founded in 1780, the Academy is one of the oldest and most renowned learned societies in the United States. More than 14,000 members have been elected for their outstanding achievements in the arts, science, business, philanthropy and public affairs.
