Myrna Dewar spent over two decades as a nurse, caring for cancer patients. She never expected that, one day, she’d be one of them. In the winter edition of Illuminate, Myrna describes how she came to be a steadfast supporter of medical research, and why she chose to leave a gift to WEHI in her Will.

🎗 Did you know that #ChildhoodCancer, though rare, remains a leading cause of death by disease among #children in #Europe? It is a devastating reality that demands immediate and concerted action. When we launched the #Manifesto on February 15th along with SIOP Europe, the European Society for Paediatric Oncology (SIOPE), our goal was to call for action towards a more #inclusive, #equitable, and #health-focused Europe, where every child has the chance to thrive. 💌 Since then, the response from organisations and policymakers has been overwhelming. As people are heading to the polls this weekend for the #EuropeanElections, we wanted to take a moment to express our appreciation to the 90 Members of the #EuropeanParliament and the 30 organisations from 30 countries that supported the manifesto and voiced their commitment into making a tangible difference in the lives of the youngest and most vulnerable members of our society. ⏳ With over 35,000 children diagnosed with cancer each year in Europe, the need for a comprehensive and collaborative approach to tackling this challenge is urgent. And the time to act is NOW! #UseYourVote 📝 Do you want to see who has signed our manifesto? Check here: https://lnkd.in/eVdVmgzE

On February 15, 2024, on International Childhood Cancer Day, we highlight the crucial role of parents, as well as family doctors and pediatricians, in the early detection of childhood cancers. Parents are the primary advocates for their children's health, and by being vigilant about the early signs and symptoms of certain types of cancer, they can be key to saving their child's life. It's concerning to note that globally, more than 1000 children are diagnosed with cancer every day. Fortunately, recent medical advances have significantly improved survival rates, particularly in high-income countries, where over 80% of children diagnosed with cancer have a chance to survive. However, there is a worrying disparity: only about 20% of children diagnosed with cancer manage to survive in some low- and middle-income countries, underscoring the urgent need to improve access to healthcare and appropriate treatments worldwide. #ChildhoodCancerAwareness #CancerPrevention #InternationalChildhoodCancerDay #TheraResearch #ClinicalTrials

On this World Cancer Day, let's unite to this year's theme, "Close the Care Gap." Today, we recognise the power of working together. We know that every single one of us can make a difference, large or small and that together, we can make real progress in reducing the global impact of cancer. It's time to take action and advocate for equitable healthcare for all. By raising awareness and standing up for those affected by cancer, we can make a real difference. Langdale Care Homes is committed to supporting this cause and spreading the message of early detection and accessible treatment. This 4 February, we call on you, whoever and wherever you are, to play your part in creating a cancer-free world. Together, let's work towards a world where everyone has equal access to the care they need regardless of their background or location. Join us in closing the care gap and positively impacting World Cancer Day. Did You Know? Cancer can be prevented and controlled by implementing evidence-based strategies for cancer prevention, screening, early detection, treatment, and palliative care. The most common modifiable risk factors for cancer, which are shared with many other noncommunicable diseases, are: Tobacco use Low fruit and vegetable intake Harmful use of alcohol Lack of physical activity #CloseTheCareGap #WorldCancerDay #langdalecarehomesuk #WeCare #NursingHome #EverydayIsDifferent #CareGivers #DementiaCare #carehomesuk #ResidentialCareHome #DementiaFriendly #carehomeactivities #carehomeactivitiesmatter #socialcaresuccess #KeepingResidentsActive #socialengagement

"Part of the problem is that it’s been difficult to model the disease. We’ve had to rely mainly on studies in mice, but these are limited in what they can tell us about the disease in people." - Matthias Zilbauer, Cambridge Stem Cell Institute. The team is now using models made from patients' cells. "In future, you could imagine taking cells from a particular patient, growing their organoid, testing different drugs on the organoid, and saying, ‘OK, this is the drug that works for this person’." - Robert Heuschkel, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust An 11-year-old who has #Crohns and was a donor for this research told Craig Brierley: "I think it's quite cool to be part of the study...It’s nice to know they're trying to get more information about Crohn’s." Great work by Thomas Dennison, Rachel Edgar, Felicity Payne, Heuschkel, Francesca Perrone, Zilbauer, and their teams! Professor Matthias Zilbauer and his team have just published their findings from using organoids to help understand Crohn's disease, showing that 'switches' that modify DNA changes in gut cells play a critical role in the disease and how it presents in patients. These organoids, created by cells from inflamed guts and donated by 160 patients (mainly children and adolescents), could in the future be used to identify the best treatment for individual patients. Professor Zilbauer says, 'Crohn's can be a severe condition to have to deal with at any age, but without our volunteers' bravery and support, we would not be able to make such discoveries as this.' Read more about the findings, and about one brave patient's story, in this feature from University of Cambridge below. https://lnkd.in/e7BEmheN

Talk to your doctor and learn more about screening.
Women are being diagnosed with lung cancer at higher rates than men. We don’t know why—and we won’t stop advocating for more research until this mystery is solved. Thank you Dr. McKee for helping to shed light on this critical women’s health issue.

Childhood cancer remains the #1 disease killer of kids in the U.S. 1 in 5 kids diagnosed with cancer do not survive due to either the progression of the diagnosis itself, the treatments, or both. 3 of 5 kids diagnosed with cancer face significant late-effects of treatment, including secondary cancers and and a multitude of debilitating diseases. Approximately 10,000 kids under the age of 15 will be diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. in 2023. We created these Childhood Cancer Awareness Month images over ten years ago and every bit of this still remains true today. There has been significant progress over the past ten years thanks to investments in science and a growing awareness of the power of integrative modalities such as diet and lifestyle, but much of this progress is privately funded led by hurting families, all while childhood cancer rates are increasing. Our community is struggling and we need your help! Help us make a dent in the stats. Together we can move the needle. Please don't forget about our kids and our cause. We need your voice, advocacy, and support! Need ideas on how to help? Let us know, we love brainstorming! Oh! And grab our classic CCAM tee - https://lnkd.in/edC-ddxc 💛 #childhoodcancer #pediatriccancer #thriverevolution #thriveagainstcancer #qualityoflife #qualityoflifematters #childhoodcancerawareness #childhoodcancerawarenessmonth #maxloveproject

Every individual's cancer journey deserves the best possible health system. That’s why we’re pleased to embrace the new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cancer Plan 🖤 👏 This significant step forward acknowledges the unique cancer challenges faced by Indigenous Australians, who face lower survival rates across all cancers than their non-Indigenous counterparts. We're committed to the journey toward better health for all Indigenous Australians and broadly support the five areas of focus, including enablers for change, early diagnosis and improving the health system at all stages of an individual’s cancer journey. Up to one-third of blood cancer deaths can be avoided through the consistent adherence to agreed national standards of timely and accurate diagnosis, treatments, and care. We're striving for change, and are ready to collaborate with NACCHO Australia, the Hon Mark Butler MP, Minister for Health and Aged Care, Senator the Hon Malarndirri McCarthy and the wider Australian health sector to roll out this essential plan 🤝 Read more about our policy submissions👇 https://loom.ly/4g_cxz0 Read the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cancer Plan 👇 https://loom.ly/uoPcfvg #advocacy #bloodcancer #cancertreatment #cancerresearch #patientadvocacy
