Today we share a major milestone in our commitment to advancing vision research. The Foundation Fighting Blindness, in collaboration with Nixon Visions Foundation, has announced the recipients of the inaugural grants in the PRPH2 and Associated Retinal Diseases (PARD) Program. After an extensive international call for proposals, nearly $1 million has been awarded to two outstanding researchers: 🔬 Dr. Andrew Goldberg of Oakland University, for his project on "Natural History and AAV-Mediated Interventions for Dominant Negative and Haploinsufficient Mouse Models of PRPH2-Associated Disease." 🔬 Dr. Yoshikazu Imanishi of Indiana University, for his project on "Elucidating Pathophysiological Mechanisms and Advancing High-Throughput Drug Discovery in PRPH2-Related Retinal Dystrophies." These grants represent a significant investment in cutting-edge research aimed at understanding and treating PRPH2-related retinal diseases. We are excited about the potential breakthroughs these projects could bring, which promise to restore vision and improve the quality of life for individuals affected by these conditions. "We are proud to provide financial support to these exceptional researchers," said Brandon Nixon, CEO of Nixon Visions Foundation. "We look forward to the important discoveries these initial grants will yield as part of our multi-year PRPH2 research funding initiative." Watch the video above featuring Jason Menzo, CEO of Foundation Fighting Blindness, to learn more about this exciting development and stay tuned for updates on this pivotal moment in inherited retinal disease research. A Pitt study published in the January issue of Oral Oncology utilized whole exome and bulk RNA sequencing to identify differences between cSCC arising in immunosuppressed and immunocompetent patients. They demonstrated an enrichment in microsatellite instability in the tumors from immunosuppressed patients and differences in oxidative phosphorylation and epithelial-mesenchymal transition, which may be targets for therapeutic intervention based on identification of mutations. #otolaryngology #headandneckcancer #genomics #immunosuppression #organtransplantation #cutaneoussquamouscellcarcinoma #tumors #mutations #immunocompetent #futuretreatments Genomic and transcriptomic analysis of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma arising in immunocompetent and immunosuppressed patients - PubMed (nih.gov)

Younger me was terrified of submitting a paper to any journal - thoughts of rejection and failure were dominant; it felt like being back at school handing in an exam, and the teacher corrected it with a red pen - no feedback, no learning curve. Publishing is different; it is a communication channel with your peers, the Editor, and you to lift up your work. Keen to hear insights from Editors from #Cell #NatureMethods #Science and #BiochemicalSociety? Join us at the end of the month for our ACDS workshop on "From Pitch to Publication - Insights from Editors"
Coming up later this month: our biennial "From Pitch to Publication" Workshop! We're absolutely thrilled to be hosting four incredible speakers: Dr Michael Funk, Dr Cheri Sirois, Prof James Murphy and Dr Rita Strack 👏 Our fantastic panel are all Scientific Editors with invaluable insights from their careers at internationally-renowned Journals, including Nature Portfolio, Cell Press, Science Magazine, Biochemical Society, and more! Join us from 9 - 10.30 am AEST on Wednesday 29th May (via Zoom) to hear Dr Funk discuss strategies for opening communication with Editors; Dr Sirois share her how-to for crafting effective abstracts; Prof Murphy explore how early and mid-career researchers can get involved with peer-review (with tips & tricks!); and Dr Strack guide us on navigating appeals and rebuttals in the post-review process! See flyer for details, including QR code and Zoom link. Event is not restricted to ACDS members; all are welcome, so feel free to share the flyer and details with your friends and colleagues, and let us know in the comments if you're coming! This is not one to miss - we can't wait! 🤩 The ACDS is proudly supported by WEHI (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research) #earlycareerresearchers #midcareerresearchers #celldeath #PhDstudents #academicpublishing #peerreview La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS) Hudson Institute of Medical Research Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity

🌍 Luxembourg's Parkinson’s Research Joins Global Effort We are thrilled to announce that the National Centre of Excellence in Research on Parkinson’s Disease (NCER-PD) has joined the landmark Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) by The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research! 🧬 About PPMI: Launched in 2010, PPMI is the most ambitious study in Parkinson’s research, aiming to develop biomarkers for Parkinson’s disease risk, onset, and progression. 🏥 Our Role: #Luxembourg’s expertise in establishing diverse cohorts will be invaluable. We will recruit local participants, including those at risk, contributing to a deeper understanding of Parkinson’s disease. 👥 Participant Enrolment: Started in April, aiming to recruit at least 50 individuals by December 2026. 🔬 Expert Insight: Prof. Rejko Krüger emphasises the importance of understanding risk factors in predicting the onset and progression of Parkinson’s disease. 💬 Michael J. Fox Foundation: Dr. Mark Frasier highlights the transformative impact of community support in Parkinson’s research. Join us in celebrating this milestone in Parkinson’s research! The news was announced by the five partner organisations, the Luxembourg Institute of Health, the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg, the University’s Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) - University of Luxembourg, the LNS - Laboratoire national de santé and Les Hôpitaux Robert Schuman (HRS). #ParkinsonsDisease | University of Luxembourg
