🔥🔋New Generation Thermal Energy Storage Systems The #Muspell project begins this month, funded with a €3.5 million Pathfinder grant from the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA). 🎯The goal is to develop an innovative solution for energy management that can provide substantial benefits in various industries and sectors, paving the way for a more sustainable future. Our team is leading the research on impact assessment and business opportunities. 👉 We identified the relevant KPIs for local energy communities from a technical and economic perspective. Our colleagues at Uni-Seeburg and Uni-Stuttgart added KPIs from a social perspective. 👉 We calculated those KPIs for different pilot implementations, e.g. the self sufficiency of the energy island (as a key technical KPI) and the levelized cost of energy (as a key economic KPI). 👉 We analyze the typical business models that are used by local energy communities and we show how technical innovations (e.g. the multi-vector optimizer) can impact the business model for different actors within the community. Building and #energysystems are complex. #Netzero is the goal. Designing them as holistic systems could be the answer. Matthias Sulzer, researcher at Empa's Urban Energy Systems Laboratory and at the Berkeley Lab in California, and Michael Wetter, researcher in the Building Technology and Urban Systems Department at the Berkeley Lab, are advocating for a 🔸paradigm shift🔸 in the planning and construction process of building and district every systems. They call for a more automated and model-based planning process, as has long been common practice in the computer chip and automotive industries. 👉️This shift has the potential to revolutionize the planning, construction and operational processes. And also promote the #digitalization and #automation essential to achieving #decarbonization goals. The first concrete application of the concept is the EU project GOES (Geothermal-based Optimized Energy Systems), which aims to develop an initial application for platform-based designs using pilot plants.
