We are embarking on the next phase of the Energy Policy Programme at the EIT InnoEnergy CommUnity, and your invaluable input is crucial to shaping our forthcoming Position Paper. This document offers a detailed review of the current state of energy systems, aiming to outline a vision for the energy system by the year 2050 within a broad European context. It identifies challenges, sets policy objectives, proposes solutions, and delineates expected outcomes. Building upon our previous paper, we will continue to delve into topics such as Heat and Power, Buildings, Consumer Behaviour, Transport, and Industry. Furthermore, we are introducing new dimensions—Digitalisation, Future Technologies like Hydrogen, and Materials.

📢Study shows: With existing technology, a climate-resilient energy system is achievable AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH , the Technische Universität Wien and the Universität für Bodenkultur Wien have released the results of project SECURES (Securing Austria's Electricity Supply in times of Climate Change), a research project that combines the science of climate and the energy system modelling to analyse the future electricity system of Austria and Europe. Studying their interplay is paramount due to the impact these aspects have on one another. The results show transitioning to renewables, expanding power grids, and advanced storage technologies are crucial. Demand-side flexibility is key, too. "Such flexibility not only saves money, but also helps to keep the power grid stable," says Gustav Resch (AIT), the project's initiator. How can grid capacity planning navigate entrenched carbon lock-ins while advancing sustainable energy transitions in the Netherlands? Last week, I had the privilege of presenting our study, "Navigating Lock-ins: Analysing Sustainability Transition Strategies and Operational Realities in Dutch Energy Infrastructure," at the Eu-SPRI Forum hosted by the University of Twente Our research employs Activity Systems theory to examine the contradictions between current grid operations and the objectives of energy decarbonization, constrained by existing technological, institutional, and behavioral lock-ins. The study highlights how the 'growth' paradigm has reached its limits within the grid, prompting DSOs to increasingly 'navigate around' these lock-ins through capacity planning and demand-side management. I would like to thank Tom Coenen and Dr. Beau Warbroek for the opportunity to present my research.
