💡We're glad to share a RES Success Story aiming to bring closer hydrogen as a low-emission energy source candidate 💡 📋Numerical study of the propagation patterns of hydrogen-air flames in Hele-Shaw chambers led by Marie-Anne Dejoan from CIEMAT ♻️ The study aimed to tackle current safety concerns regarding the potential use of hydrogen as a low-emission candidate to replace carbon fuels 🔥The research team reproduced the complex flame dynamics of lean hydrogen in a very confined geometry, especially the formation of two-headed and fractal cell patterns 🖥️ Thanks to RES supercomputer #MareNostrum4 from Barcelona Supercomputing Center, they showed that temperarure - which is hardly measurable in experiments - is large enough at the highly-curved head cells to ensure combustion, allowing for stable propagation under large heat loses With all the data gathered using #HPC resources, they also inferred an interplay between the equivalent ratio and heat loss parameters for the flame cell regime to occurr

Metasurface Energy Harvesters (MEHs): a prominent enabler of highly efficient RF energy harvesters. Their constituting metamaterials can enable highly efficient energy harvesters, by optimizing the current distribution over the entire metasurface to create a matched impedance network with respect to the environmental impedance. In the recent paper put down with Alireza Ghaneizadeh, Ph.D., Prof. Mojtaba Joodaki, and my PhD student Panagiotis Gavriilidis, we delve into the fundamentals of the MEH technology, providing a comprehensive overview of their working principle, unit cell designs and prototypes over various frequency bands, as well as state-of-the-art modes of operation. We also study the interplay between Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) and MEHs aiming for energy sustainable RISs powered by metasurface-based RF energy harvesting. We present a novel hybrid unit cell design capable of simultaneous energy harvesting and 1-bit tunable reflection whose dual-functional response is validated via full-wave simulations. We also conduct a comparative collection of real-world measurements for ambient RF power levels and power consumption budgets of reflective RISs to unveil the potential for a self-sustainable RIS via ambient RF energy harvesting. The paper is concluded with an elaborative discussion on open design challenges and future research directions for MEHs and energy sustainable hybrid RISs. https://lnkd.in/dF8HEnDk #6G #B5G #wirelesscommunications #energyharvesting #metasurfaces #RIS #sustainability #energyefficiency
