Last month, we had the privilege of hosting a series of impactful events, including Hakeem Jeffries' Annual Clergy breakfast, Bridge Street Settlement's CDNA Presentation on Ocean Hill and Weeksville, and "Kick Push," a vibrant celebration of youth in collaboration with Kingsborough Community Center and Spark House. All of these events centered around investing into the future of central Brooklyn, exploring community needs, enhancing quality of life, and empowering our future through the youth. Weeksville is honored to serve as a vital hub for meaningful discourse, and we are proud to carry forward the legacy of Historic Weeksville as a space for community dialogue for years to come. The MWEJN’s work is grounded in the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing. Emerging from grassroots organizing in 1996, the Principles prioritize inclusivity, bottom-up organizing, letting people speak for themselves, working together in solidarity and mutuality, building just relationships, and self-transformation Together, these principles outline how we can operate in ways that are grounded in core values and drive lasting community change.

"On this episode, Amber and Erika are joined by Maggie Parker, the founder and CEO of Innovan Neighborhoods to discuss a new, more equitable way of creating affordable housing: through community development. Maggie walks us through the process, which includes putting the voices of community members at the forefront of the development conversation, empowering BIPOC developers committed to equity, and using the right funding partner. We also discuss the historical and present systemic barriers that have made access to housing difficult of Black people. Maggie highlights how equitable development often takes much longer than the traditional process and introduces the importance of using “patient capital," which are funding partners willing to allow more time before expecting a return on investment."

Reflecting on two days of insightful conversation and shared wisdom at the Grantmakers of Kentucky Event! Here are some insights and takeaways from our CEO, Tiffany Benjamin, on exploring innovative strategies and discussing the challenges and triumphs in grantmaking: -A particularly impactful session was dedicated to Community Listening; Panelists shared how they build the ability to hear from the community before making funding decisions. -Discussion revolving around the evaluation of strategies to ensure the voices of community are truly being heard. A cautionary tale was shared by a participant, highlighting the experience of a funder who devised a strong plan, only to have the strategy go unused because there had not been direct engagement with the families in the community. -We also discussed that we now have fewer local connections to each other and we need to do more to come together to create spaces for people to convene.
