I couldn’t help but note an article this week that covered NYSE polling their market participants about the merits of being open 24 hours a day. While this isn’t a new concept—stock futures, treasury bonds and crypto can be bought and sold at any time—it’s certainly a new idea for equities. As a #communicationsconsultant for #publiccompanies, I like the open/close window. It gives us the chance to disseminate client news and then have very important stakeholder calls to make sure the points in the news are well understood. It allows the sell-side to gather their notes and update their models before the next day’s first trade. ➡One of the worst outcomes for any company is for the market to incorrectly interpret important news and trade on that information. Now, it’s my job to make sure that news is clear, but taking away the market close window certainly puts firms like Gateway Group, as well as management teams, on higher alert for longer parts of the day. ...And I can’t imagine liquidity being strong at 2am. Plus, if the share price goes haywire at that time, does a portfolio manager need to call the CFO (or me) right after? No more “Do Not Disturb” iPhone notifications while I sleep. 📲 The cart may already be out of the barn with the precedent for 24-hour trading windows being out there, but I’m not sure it’s the most efficient way for companies to get fairly valued. #stockmarket #NYSE #trading #finance #investors #investing

Today, in the stock market, I sold a little over a third of my remaining shares of COIN. COIN has been one of my best investments ever! It has gained 285% year-to-date (81% in the past month alone)! This is about a 40-year gain on average in just 11 months (or an 11.5-year gain in just one month). So, it makes sense to sell some shares. I am presently about 20% invested in stocks (including a 2% hedge via TLT and UVXY) and own shares of TLT, UVXY, ASPN, GNK, COIN, VMEO, and ACCO. Most of my portfolio is now invested in fixed income which fits much better with my low-risk investor profile. My portfolio has gained 51% this year so far and has greatly outperformed each of the major stock indexes. We’ll see what the rest of 2023 brings.
