Have you ever wondered why a Bacs payment is a 3-day process?   When first established in 1968, businesses would generate all transactions onto a physical reel - which identified who needed to be paid, and from what account. These reels were taken to Bacs head office by a courier, who would physically transport payment data by bike… 🏍   …Bacs would break down these reels into individual payments, and send them off (again, via courier) to each individual bank.   This is where the 3 day process came from!   Bacs was rebranded to BacsTEL in 1983, which was labelled as such as data was sent via TELephone dial-up service! ☎   And again renamed to Bacstel-IP in 2002, once the switch was made to internet communication.   While the submission of bacs payments over the last 50 years has changed dramatically, the infrastructure to process these transactions hasn’t, meaning the 3-day cycle still exists.   Thanks to Gavin Lawrence at Movimo, who provided Bacs training last month, and shared a lot of valuable insight into all things Bacs. #Bacs #PayUK
