We're excited about the school year with Governors' Village STEM Academy! We had the honor of supporting their PTA Kickoff Meeting last week. PTAs are traditionally meant for fundraising purposes, but we are working with schools to build more equitable practices with family empowerment. This means: 🎒 Allowing families to volunteer in lieu of paying a PTA membership. 🎒 Building committees for parents and caretakers to partake and plan events that would be beneficial for other families at the school. 🎒 Centering interactions based on relationship-building for families to get to know other families, teachers, and admin. EXCITING news! Outagamie County has awarded $2.75 million to two local nonprofits to establish a family resource center and a shared services program. The awards are funded by the county’s American Rescue Plan Act dollars and made available through a competitive process. First 5 Fox Valley will receive $2 million to support the development of a family resource center, which will bring partner agencies together in a coordinated way to provide strength-based, universal services to families at free or low cost. Services are intended to build parental resilience, foster social connections between families, and support healthy child development. The family resource center is envisioned as a centralized “hub” (main location) with “spokes” (other locations and virtual spaces throughout the county). This project received some crucial planning grant funds from the Women's Fund for the Fox Valley Region and the Mielke Early Years Fund within the Community Foundation, In addition, Child Care Resource & Referral, Fox Cities will receive $750,000 to launch a childcare essential services program, designed to save childcare providers time and money by centralizing staffing, maintenance, janitorial, technological, and educational support services. Participating providers will be provided a pathway to increase wages/benefits of early childhood educators or to focus on establishing financial reserves without increasing tuition for parents. PA Adult & Teen Challenge (PAATC) is on a mission to bring opportunities for wholeness to individuals, families, and communities in need. Because of the partnership with High Foundation, PAATC was able to renovate multiple units in their Men’s Long-Term Program dorms and transform the space. PAATC staff shared that the renovation created a clean, comfortable space that resulted in students displaying pride in their surroundings, lending itself to more tidy rooms, fewer behavior issues, and overall satisfaction in the program. One student shared, “[I] came straight from prison into this program, so it was certainly an upgrade for me. When I came here, it reminded me of home—it was clean, the construction was well done, and it seemed like the people that did the work really cared about the work they were doing and the purpose behind it. The renovated space created a low-stress environment. To be able to experience recovery in a clean, safe and comfortable space does something for you—it makes you truly want this for yourself!” For students who have lived on the streets, in and out of foster homes, rehabs, and prisons, this space gives them something to take care of and be proud of. In it for the kids! It’s been so exciting to lead the strategic planning process for the beloved St. James's Children's Center, in partnership with Executive Director Diahann Whittington and Board Chair Stacy Brinkley. This nonprofit early childhood education center has been a shining star in the early childhood space for years. Despite a strong culture and shared sense of the philosophy of the organization, there was no unifying Vision Statement to capture it. So we wrote one that captures both the current and long-term impact of the Children’s Center’s work: “Our work creates a more connected, compassionate and capable community, today and in the future.” (Side note: We’re particularly proud of the alliteration. 🤓) Through some thoughtful and meaningful discussions between the planning team, staff/teachers, board, and stakeholders in the community, the Children’s Center has crafted a plan that is both inspiring and achievable. The Goals and Strategies in the plan will lead to real benefits for children, families, and early childhood educators. But I don’t have to just watch from the sidelines, because I’ll be staying regularly engaged with Diahann as she quarterbacks the implementation of the plan.
