#thursdaythought In addition to replacing old Victorian era terraced houses - that had long fallen into disrepair - with homes that enjoy enhanced design, space and environmental standards, the partnership’s (New Tyne West Development Company) approach to build has been creative - including what is thought to be one of the biggest residential retaining wall structures in the UK. With a combined length of more than a kilometre, reaching almost 8.8 metres at the highest point and with a surface area of more than 4,800 square metres, the seven retaining walls at The Rise - and there are 15 more still to construct - are something to behold and have meant that even more open space can be created on northern banks of the River Tyne.

Denver-based Revesco Properties partnered with Davis Partnership Architects to submit plans to the city of Denver on February 2 to convert a 16-story office building at 475 17th St. into about 210 affordable and market-rate apartments. The building was designed in 1973 and is currently 57% vacant. No leases will be ended early because of the possible conversion. Looking at the makeup of the proposed conversion, two-thirds of the apartments will be for people earning 80% of the area median income or below. One-third will be market-rate apartments. There will be studios, one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom units.  There is no parking onsite. 'Why do you love terraced houses so much?' Well firstly stating the obvious...terraced streets are quintessential examples of the UK's heritage. The layout driven by need was typically constructured in the 19th century, but dating all the way back to the late 17th century. As time went on, these homes developed a unique charm and character, often blending historic architecture with modern amenities. The latter isn't really evident walking along the street but it is when panning around the rear of these homes on Google 3D. Or...if you take the opportunity to visit these homes during the Open City periods. I also suppose my interest is also influenced by nostalgia. Having grown up in a sweet little terraced house with a basement, I re-imagined the featured coal chute being Santa's way in during the Christmas period (let's not talk about how my imagination kept me away from the basement for the rest of the year!). Having known all of our neighbours about 5 houses on either side, my brother and I took advantage of the weak fences. Crawling through during during the summer months, we gathered together with other children our age in one garden to play tag, hide and seek, or whatever else it was that we played. Anyway, the article below by Architecture Today sent me back. I love the images created, the sash windows, the clear repitition infused with small details that differentiate each home. The article goes on to exploring more ways to differentiate, and expand these homes that are pretty much constrained within the terraced format.
