On April 18, WCTC School of Business held a Spring IT Career Day, which contained a full day of professional development for students! In the morning, students had the opportunity to get their resume reviewed by an industry professional and WCTC’s Career Connections staff. Following this, over 35 students attended guest speaker, Diana Rivera, MBA from Women in Technology Wisconsin (WIT), to hear about her professional experiences and the value and importance of mentorship. The day concluded with the most anticipated event for students, the IT Career & Internship Fair! We had over 90 students attend, and we hosted 10 employers and 2 professional organizations. Students were able to explore different career opportunities and gain experience interacting with employers. Thank you to all participating organizations, with special thanks to our Gold and Silver Sponsors: TopLine Results Corporation, CTaccess, Inc., TEKsystems, Third Coast IT, and MC Services. If you're interested in participating in future events, please reach out!

Our day at the Careers Fair held at a local secondary school was really enlightening. 💡 Engaging with Year 10 and Year 11 students about their plans for once they finished school showed a common theme of uncertainty. Many of them were unsure about their career goals or what different opportunities are available to them when they finish secondary school. They seemed relieved to hear that their options weren’t anywhere near as limited as they thought! We were fortunate enough to be able to continue our discussions after school with parents. It was amazing to witness the genuine interest many parents had in the prospect of their children pursuing Apprenticeships. It was also refreshing to see a school so engaged in highlighting the different prospects and further education routes available rather than focusing solely on the traditional route of college followed by university! However, the most impactful moment of the day was a conversation with a highly driven young student who aspired to become a Software Engineer. As we delved deeper into his motivation, he shared a desire to follow in his father's footsteps and make him proud, inspired by his father's excellence in the field. It was clear that his dad was a really influential role model in his life! 💡 This day was a reminder of the vital role we, as parents, caregivers, employers and educators, play in guiding the next generation towards not only enjoyable but also promising career pathways. I walked away proud to have made an impact on so many young peoples lives, and their parents of course! If any of my network can get themselves out there to attend career fairs in their local area, please do it. The next generation need you! #Apprenticeships #Skills #Development #Learning #Education #Students

Are you looking for meaningful ways to support youth development and mentorship? Here are some ideas of activities you can engage in with students: 1️⃣ Arrange a virtual or in-person job shadow so students can gain firsthand exposure to the day-to-day responsibilities and realities of your career. 2️⃣ Offer constructive feedback and guidance on student projects or assignments related to their career interests, helping them refine their skills and ideas. 3️⃣ Host a webinar for students tailored to your specific industry. In addition to discussing skills within your career, share skills universal to any industry, such as time management, professional etiquette, and networking strategies. 4️⃣ Conduct mock interviews with students, simulating real-world interview scenarios and providing valuable feedback on their performance, communication skills, and confidence. 5️⃣ Facilitate an internship or apprenticeship opportunity on-site or virtually to give students the chance to gain hands-on experience and mentorship in their chosen field. 6️⃣ Coordinate or participate in career fairs or expos. If you would like to host any of these experiences for students, comment down below so we can help you get started!

What are three things employers should know about Gen Z students when attending Careers Fairs this autumn? ➡️1. We know that Gen Z are the digital natives, rasied on technology who are used to looking things up, but there is a lot to look up. The amount of information online can be overwhelming especially for students entering the world of work for the first time. Treat the students like new customers who haven't heard of you, ask them questions about their degrees, invite questions from them and maybe you'll find a new type of student who could be your next best employee. ➡️2. Students are concerned with the environment, sustainability values, diversity and inclusion in life and in the workplace. These are concerns, values, and interests that I hear from students every day. Employers who can talk about how their companies address these areas are going to have a big impact on students finishing their degrees this year. ➡️3. In the past few years there has been a massive shift in third-level education towards universal design learning and an increase in supports available for students with disabilities, learning needs, from disadvanted backgrounds etc. Students today have experienced a much more diverse education than I did just a decade ago and are expecting that their learning journey going forward will be (if not equal) comparable to the learning support they have experienced in university. Talking about inclusive and diverse learning practices that you have will hit home with this generation and likely diversify your talent pool of applicants and employees as well. Our DCU Graduate Careers Fairs take place on the 4th and 5th of October on the Glasnevin Campus. Can't wait to see everyone there!
