🧬🧬🧬New technologies are making Discover Life in America’s quest to document all the plants and animals in Great Smoky Mountains National Park faster and more efficient than ever. In fact, DLiA staff and a cadre of biologists and volunteers are already using DNA barcoding and environmental DNA methodologies to expedite our discoveries. We could see an unprecedented surge in progress toward better understanding America’s most biologically diverse national park. But only with your help… Each donation of just $25 helps us to identify a species in the Smokies! So far, just this year, we have: ✔️Added 204 species to the Smokies All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory, including a whopping 16 species that are new to science, ✔️Helped over 2,000 community scientists add 37,000 species observation records to the iNaturalist platform, including 61 new species records for the Smokies, ✔️Mentored 3 promising young conservationists for our 12-week summer internship, ✔️Reached over 3,000 youth and adults across 55 biodiversity-focused outreach events, ✔️Reached 4,500 students across 41 schools through our iScience middle school program And so much more! Help us to do even more in 2024! 🧬🐛🦇🐾🪳🐜 Join the discovery at: dlia.org/donate-now or text D-L-I-A to #53-555 #givingtuesday #SmokiesATBI #GSMNP #greatsmokymountains #mountainsarecalling #communityscience #BiodiversityConservation #BiodiversityResearch #DiscoverLifeinAmerica #GreatSmokyMountainsNationalPark #ATBI

Practicing Critical Thinking- Especially during such challenging times, I am very grateful for the opportunity to deliver once again the "Kavli Institute for Nanoscience Delft workshop on Critical Thinking" at Erasmus MC, in the minor nanobiology program. Together we discussed climate change, gender bias, social media platforms and the basics for critical dissection of information. Here are some ground rules for Do's and Dont's, beautifully illustrated by Yael Golan.

🏙 How citizens and social movements are facing growing social and environmental inequalities in contemporary cities? 🗣 Daniela Giudici, postdoc researcher at #DIST, within his #MSCA project #TAKEBACK will study how civil society are responding to the challenge of creating more inclusive, sustainable and just urban environments, by exploring new meanings of urban citizenship in an increasingly vulnerable world. _____________________________ 📌 What is #MSCAnswers? Through the years, many researchers have chosen #PoliTO to develop their projects in the context of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowships: it's time to discover their stories and research through their own voices! 🌍 Embracing open science for global collaboration 🌐 Open science is more than just a trend — it's a transformative approach that fosters collaboration and inclusivity on a global scale. We can bridge the gap between research teams and diverse communities worldwide by opening research processes and products to all. The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy's Year of Open Science Recognition Challenge highlights the narratives and teams involved in initiatives that have tackled challenges or propelled solutions while embodying the principles and practices of open science. The #NSFfunded Exchange for Local Observations and Knowledge of the Arctic (ELOKA) project was recently announced as a winner in this challenge. ELOKA was established to directly engage with Indigenous partners across the Arctic, facilitating the ethical sharing and utilization of this vital data. Through a commitment to open science and relationship-building, ELOKA has advanced the understanding of Arctic sciences and empowered Arctic Indigenous peoples to assert their self-determination. https://bit.ly/3TWvitM #OpenScience #ArcticResearch

Eqi Luo, a first-year PhD. student at the Earth Science Department, told us about his very diverse international background and current journey. Eqi’s research will aim to understand the impact urbanization and climate-related risks have on the “most deprived population in low and middle-income countries,” and this focus is equipped with his international background. “I guess having a diverse background has been key to my graduate program success. With experiences in China, the Netherlands, and field work in Africa (Egypt, Kenya, Uganda), I've developed a rich international perspective - critical for researching urbanization and climate change."
