High teacher turnover can hinder a school's ability to support and enhance children's learning, especially in disadvantaged settings. Retaining teachers in these schools is crucial for social justice, as frequent turnover can lead to poor educational outcomes for children. As a Headteacher, I became quickly aware of the importance of retaining high-quality teachers. The school community must therefore be properly nurtured to enable all those within it to flourish educationally, professionally and personally. Having effective staff in a school is one way to ensure continuity and stability for children. Schools are all about people, so it is vital they remain caring, vibrant, creative and social institutions. In all schools there is a need for inspiring, resilient and caring teachers, who are in it for the ‘long haul’; teachers who are part of the history of the school, who know the children and their families well, and who contribute to providing a safe and familiar environment for young minds to think creatively, critically and independently. May 1st typically marks a significant milestone for high school seniors - National College Decision Day. However, this year is different. With FAFSA delays resulting in fewer seniors pursuing college, universities are bracing for lower enrollment and revenue this fall. Enrollment management leaders will need to think outside the box and invest in non-traditional channels to address the gap we're likely to see once census data is available. If you're curious about how #adultlearners and #stopouts can help offset this trend, let's connect!

ALERT | SB 765 Provides More Compensation and Allows for an Exception to the Temporary Waiting Period for School Districts to Hire Retired Teachers | 05.22.2024 Beginning July 1, 2024, Senate Bill 765 (“SB 765”) will allow a limited-time exception to the waiting period for school districts to hire retired members of the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (“CalSTRS”). This bill also provides greater incentives for retired teachers to accept work with school districts. SB 765 is part of the Legislature’s effort to address the educational workforce shortage in California. While employee shortages have been ongoing since before the COVID-19 pandemic, the pandemic has significantly exacerbated the problem. This hiring crisis is further compounded by the vast increase in teacher retirements since the pandemic. California ranks third among all states in the nation in severity of teacher shortages, with more than 10,000 teacher vacancies during the 2021-2022 school year. Community colleges are definitely winning by recruiting older students, but without the proper systems in place, we're going to see more strain put on staff. We've seen that institutions can thrive when changing their recruitment strategies, but that change has to be sustainable in the long-term. #CommunityCollege #CollegeEnrollment
