ALERT | SB 765 Provides More Compensation and Allows for an Exception to the Temporary Waiting Period for School Districts to Hire Retired Teachers | 05.22.2024 Beginning July 1, 2024, Senate Bill 765 (“SB 765”) will allow a limited-time exception to the waiting period for school districts to hire retired members of the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (“CalSTRS”). This bill also provides greater incentives for retired teachers to accept work with school districts. SB 765 is part of the Legislature’s effort to address the educational workforce shortage in California. While employee shortages have been ongoing since before the COVID-19 pandemic, the pandemic has significantly exacerbated the problem. This hiring crisis is further compounded by the vast increase in teacher retirements since the pandemic. California ranks third among all states in the nation in severity of teacher shortages, with more than 10,000 teacher vacancies during the 2021-2022 school year. This week marks the open access publication of our study on older adult movement speeds within Long Term Care Facilities. Led by Bronwyn Forrest and the team at University of Waterloo, our paper “Older Adult Stair and Walking Speeds from Controlled Trials as Inputs into Simulations of Retirement Home Evacuation” has been published in Collective Dynamics : https://lnkd.in/ehT_Bixr. As part of the study I completed the Pathfinder retirement home simulations (day and night scenarios with residents, visitors and staff as modelled occupants) which showed differences in predicted time to egress when inputs from this study are used relative to model defaults, demonstrating that ensuring model input parameters accurately represent segments of the older adult population is critical in rendering more realistic predicted egress outcomes.

#DidYouKnow the 1918 Education Act raised the school leaving age from 12 to 14? It abolished all fees in primary schools and widened the provision of medical inspection, nursery, and special needs education. Nearly 60% of the financial burden of education was transferred from local authorities to Central Government to foster a greater sense of professionalism among teachers by raising salaries and pensions. The ‘Fisher Act’ was one of the first steps in Education reform which opened access to disadvantaged children and heavily influenced the more well-renowned 1944 Education Act. #socialmobilityhistory #socialmobility
