An interesting study by Professor Zongwei Cai on #airpollution in #taiyuan, #China. Taiyuan, shanxi province, is my hometown, the place I was born and grew up. It is a place with rich culture and history, such as having the first bank in history in China (票号). However, due to the mass coal production in the region, Shanxi is heavily polluted. Like stated in the article, sustainable urban planning and management strategies are extremely important for cities like Taiyuan.

From May 15 to May 28, 2024, I had the privilege of participating in the Seminar on "Environmental Management and Sustainable Development for Developing Countries" in China. This event was sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China and organized by Suzhou University of Science and Technology. The seminar brought together participants from over 10 countries and featured a comprehensive program with 11 lectures and 8 workshops and site visits, all focused on promoting environmental management and sustainable development. Key topics covered included: - Scientific & Technical Innovation Promoting Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development in Suzhou: We explored the role and practices of scientific and technological innovation in environmental protection and sustainable development. - Circular Economy & Sustainable Development: Discussions centered on the concepts and significance of the circular economy and its relationship to sustainable development. - China’s Reform and Open-Up: Regional Development of Open Economy and the South Jiangsu Mode: Insight into the development of the regional economy under the South Jiangsu Model. - Carbon Peak, Carbon Neutrality, and Carbon Market Construction Process: Analysis of global climate change trends, responsibilities of countries in carbon emission reduction, and progress in carbon neutrality policies in China and abroad. - Introduction to Natural Capital Accounting: Highlighting the importance of green development and the role of natural capital accounting in promoting ecological civilization and green development in China. Additionally, we visited leading companies in wastewater treatment and waste management, providing us with valuable insights into practical applications of the studies. I am incredibly grateful for this enriching experience and the opportunity to expand my network with professionals from various countries. A recent article by Tsinghua University, Xiamen University, and Macau University of Science and Technology analyzed the temporal and regional-scale spatial relationships between value-added and production-based GHG emissions in Chinese value chains. The study reveals a gradual increase in value-added GHG emissions within interprovincial value chains, with roles of different provinces evolving from suppliers to consumers of value-added emissions. The analysis emphasizes the need for close monitoring of industrially produced value-added GHG emissions in some provinces. This research provides valuable insights into China's regional differences and dynamics of carbon emissions growth patterns. I have previously shared a few figures here regarding the substantial improvements in China's quantity and quality of research outputs (e.g. journal articles) over the past decade. This supplement from Nature Index offers further data that provide additional context regarding some of the key changes that are currently underway. In 2024 China aims to build up a „Beautiful China“ 美丽中国. What does that mean? My take:   Environment comes back again! (after being put on the backburner for the sake of (trying to) get the economy back on track in 2023) There are loads of indications out there, here are two of them: -         Poor mid-term assessment of the 14th Five-Year Plan’s environmental targets (NDRC has called on the officials in charge) -         High-level policy document calls for reducing air and water pollution as well as waste (“Beautiful China”, seems to be synonymous with “Green China”) (remarkable: local officials will get quantitative targets) Watch out for... ... too strict requirements from local officials. Just recently, some German companies in a tier 3 city in the Yangtse River Delta again got stricter requirements for installing air filters than their local neighbors. … more inspections in companies on environmental issues.
