12 years ago I visited South Africa and had the opportunity to meet amazing people of this great country and visit Robben Island as well learn more about Nelson Mandela. Here the 5 personal takeaways from Mandela, with my favourite being the importance of having a clear vision and sticking to it, no matter what challenges we face. Lead with Humility: Nelson Mandela was known for his humility and willingness to listen to others. Despite being a highly influential figure, he never let his power or prestige go to his head. He believed that a good leader is not the one who does the greatest things but the one who gets people to do the greatest things. Perseverance is Crucial: Mandela faced numerous challenges and setbacks throughout his life, including 27 years in prison. Yet, he never gave up on his fight against apartheid. His perseverance teaches us that no matter how difficult or impossible a situation may seem, we must never give up. Stand Up for What is Right: Mandela stood up against the apartheid system despite the risks to his own life and freedom. He believed in equality and justice and was willing to sacrifice everything for these principles. This teaches us that a true leader stands up for what they believe in, even if it means standing alone. Forgiveness and Reconciliation: After his release from prison, instead of seeking revenge, Mandela chose a path of forgiveness and reconciliation. He understood that in order to move forward and build a better future, it was necessary to forgive and heal the wounds of the past. Vision for the Future: Mandela had a clear vision for a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities.
