Step Into the Experience: A Day with the Terps! Hosted at the Jones-Hill House, home of the Maryland Terrapins football, on Saturday, March 4, 2024, we embarked on an extraordinary journey with the 100 Black Men of Greater Washington, DC, our Saturday Leadership Academy, Collegiate 100, and parents. It was a day filled with excitement, inspiration, and unforgettable moments at the University of Maryland, hosted by @Terpsfootball. Immersive Beginnings: Our day kicked off with exhilarating highlight videos, reliving the Terrapins' triumphs from the recent football season, including their remarkable victory in the 2023 TransPerfect Music City Bowl. The energy was palpable as we cheered for our team's success! Unexpected Surprises: We were in for a treat when Head Coach Michael Locksley @coachlocks himself graced us with his presence, offering warm greetings and insightful remarks. Our youth even had the chance to engage in a Q&A session with Coach Locksley, making the experience all the more memorable. Guided Exploration: Splitting into groups, we embarked on immersive tours of the state-of-the-art facility, led by UMD Terrapin student interns. From the cutting-edge training rooms to the in-door practice field, every corner was filled with inspiration and possibility. Empowering Messages: Coaches shared invaluable insights on character development, emphasizing the significance of integrity and resilience in achieving our dreams. Their passionate words resonated deeply, reminding us of the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity. A Moment of Inspiration: Wrapping up our day, we were honored to hear from Preston Brown, @pgreat81 WR Coach for Delaware State University. His heartfelt speech about overcoming obstacles and finding purpose in coaching left us feeling empowered and motivated to chase our dreams. Together, we can create moments of inspiration and impact that will last a lifetime. #EmpowerTheYouth #TerpsExperience #100BlackMenDC #ONETEAM #SaturdayLeadershipAcademy #collegiate100hu #ONETEAM #LEADERSHIP #EMPOWERMENT #NEXTGENERATION #SLA #100blackmendc #100blackmen #100bmoa #STEMTHE100WAY #WhatTheySeeIsWhatTheyllBe #mentoring #education #healthandwellness #economicempowerment

😎 What's the best office prank you've experienced and why? 😰 Some dismiss them as shenanigans, which can only go wrong. 😀 Others recognise their power to build stronger relationships & boost team moral. 😄 It's where humour meets productivity & laughter blends with teamwork. Today I was at a secondary school for my weekly mentoring session with my young person. I learn something new every time I visit. It happened to be a "Prank" day at the school. The sixth formers were celebrating finishing school - no more lessons, only A level exams left to take. 😁 As you can imagine there was more excitement and energy than normal. ☣ Wanted Posters were up offer rewards for the most dangerous students. 🌊 Water Cannons were being used purposefully around the school. 🦆 10,000 miniature yellow ducks were hidden for students to find. 🤠 Sixth Formers were in cowboy/girl fancy dress. 👏 It was great to see all the staff and pupils embracing the spirit of the occasion and also see first hand the positive impact it had on the young person I mentor. #teambuilding #moral #culture #motivation #leadership #pranks #teamwork #productivity #coaching #mentoring #teamspirit

Thanks for sharing your insight with our program #MauraMills. Helping them along the path to realizing their potential is a benefit to us all.
Enjoyed speaking to students at Culverhouse College of Business' Diversity in Business Bridge Program today. This program is a gem, helping to move the needle on closing gaps in access, opportunity, & exposure to business fields for students from underrepresented groups. I'm honored to have the opportunity to speak to such an engaged, enthusiastic group of young professionals, and can't wait to see where your paths will lead you.

As a professor, I know the importance of accepting feedback from my students. One thing they've mentioned enjoying is having guest speakers. Bringing outside voices into the classroom can offer unique perspectives and personal accounts of vital points in their careers. Check out this clip from our conversation with Andre Price, Director at Chicago Fire FC. #teachingmoment

How Can Parents Combat Summer Learning Loss? The most significant partnership to help students be successful is between parents and educators. Parents are students' first teachers. Therefore, building a solid relationship with parents ensures that students receive a consistent message from parents and educators. In today's video, we'll discuss how informed and proactive parental involvement can mitigate the "Summer Slide" by integrating educational activities into children's daily routines during their summer vacation. #EducationalLeader, Kim “When students are led well, they learn well.” The views shared in the Educational Leadership Moment are solely mine and do not reflect the positions of my employer or any entity within the local, state, or federal government sectors. #Education #Leadership

This memory popped up of my daughter joining me as I opened up the floor and brought the Color Guard forward for swearing in our states representatives. Involving kids in your professional life is imperative. Regardless if they follow your steps or not- include them. It’s important that they know why you are gone so much, how the bills are paid and what it takes to travel/vacation/buy presents. Showing them what it takes instead of just telling them you work hard. Showing them what you do to make spreadsheets, budget time to get places, public speaking or presenting to leadership, and many other learning opportunities exist through you explaining your work and including them. Inspire your youth #youth #development #professionaldevelopment

Check out the latest episode of A608 afterhours with your humble servant as the guest!
The latest episode of bit.ly/a608afterhours is up! Elena Luna is a School Superintendent and member of the Division of Schools at Boston Public Schools where she works to find solutions to dismantling the oppressive nature of K-12 educational systems and designing K-12 systems that are inclusive, anti-racist, and empowering for historically oppressed communities. Elena's commitment to her work is shaped by her lived experiences as a daughter of Mexican working-class immigrants, first-generation college graduate and low-income student. Monica and I spoke with Elena about her work at BPS, how her core values of respect, humility and relationships were shaped by her own experiences and now impact her work, and how her thinking about teams and teaming has evolved as she's moved between public and charter school systems, from the classroom to organizational and system-level leadership.

Interrogating the behaviours that uphold systems of power is integral to dismantling them: I am excited to start this journey with Letesia Gibson and team over the next year 🚀
A couple of months ago I posted here about an idea I had for a leadership learning journey to unlearn white supremacy culture. I was blown away by the response we got from those wanting to unlearn and have more equitable impact - with many people sharing deep and very considered reasons about why this was important to their life and work. White supremacy culture has transcended being only about race, although that is still a part of it. Today it has come to be more synonymous with workplace culture than any of us would really like to admit. It is upheld by us all and negatively impacts so many of us, but especially those with marginalised identities. But at its essence its a system of control that keeps the same kinds of people in power, prioritising the same things, blocking change in the same ways and stunting equitable growth for all. Last week we had the first session in a series of 12 over the coming year. We have an amazing group of leaders and practioners coming from different parts of the world, with diverse identities and lots of interesting leadership experiences and spheres of influence for change. I feel privileged to be journeying with them and feel that so much is going to come from these early seeds of a community! I'm so looking forward to working together and learning from each other, and will post periodically about the insights, ideas and solutions we generate as a collective. We'll definitely run another cohort in the future, so if this sounds like something you'd like to be part of then do join our waitlist here. https://lnkd.in/dEEZat-x
