Teacher Talking Time, or TTT for short, has unfortunately been relegated to the annals of 'low impact' techniques in recent years. The misconception that seems to be permeating schools at an alarming rate is that the more a teacher talks, the less the students learn. This, however, is an oversimplistic and rather narrow-minded viewpoint to adopt. 🧑🏫👩🏫👨🏫🧑🎓 Find out why, here: https://lnkd.in/gDf-XnBm #teachingandlearning

A new theory of effective teacher professional development suggests that: "...PD needs to pay careful attention to four things if it is to bring about sustained improvements in teaching. First, it needs to provide insight (I) about teaching and learning. For example, a teacher might learn that working memory is composed of separate visual-spatial and phonological systems, each of which has limited capacity (Baddeley & Hitch, 1974). Second, PD should motivate (M) teachers to make changes to their practice. For example, a teacher might resolve to limit the cognitive load their exposition of a subject places on either the visual-spatial or the phonological system within working memory. Third, PD should provide techniques (T) for putting these insights to work. For example, a teacher might invite pupils to read text from the board in silence, rather than also reading out the text, in order to avoid overloading the phonological loop with both written and aural input. Fourth, PD must embed that change in practice (P). For example, a teacher might use the “read silently from the board” technique multiple times, across different classes, until it becomes a routine part of their practice." The Data-Informed Teacher Development solution by Things Education is made up of observation-feedback-practice cycles that applies the principles stated in this paper. TEPS forms a core part of this solution too, providing teachers with over 50,000 teaching strategies tagged to specific learning outcomes and pedagogical approaches across all subjects from Pre-K to Grade 10. Here is another joint piece for #SundayDiaryy—From Compliance to Creativity: The Power of Teacher Agency. In the article, @MettaBhavana31 and I explore the most essential aspect of teaching: Teachers' agency! Teacher’s agency is a popular concept in educational literature, with scholars in this domain asserting its imperative nature. According to them, a teacher must possess agency as it is integral to their role; without it, a teacher cannot effectively function. This close association between agency and the identity of a teacher makes it indispensable for their professional duties. However, despite being considered inalienable, the reality is quite different. Through extensive bureaucratic control and management practices worldwide, agencies have been stripped from teachers, forcing them to function merely as professionals following given instructions. The consequence is evident in dull classrooms with a lack of innovation, where children feel stifled. The teacher's work requires constant thinking, creating a delicate balance between thinking and doing. Unfortunately, historical efforts have aimed to deprive teachers of their primary task of thinking.... https://lnkd.in/gMGNsrwU

The importance of evidence-based practice in education is well-known. As a teacher, how equipped do you feel with the latest evidence to help inform your teaching approach in the classroom? In this article, Nuella Flynn says effective explicit instruction is a dynamic and responsive set of practices. As a teacher, would you describe your own approach to classroom instruction as dynamic and responsive? Or, does it lean more towards being a one-dimensional approach from teacher to student?
