Like all creative projects, #ThePlaceEconomy has grown and evolved over time. When the first volume came out in 2016, we wanted to demonstrate how investment in better placemaking equates to greater financial and social benefits. We asked the question, “How are great cities made?” and attempted to answer it by commissioning expert opinion from all over the world, and featuring case studies from 16 cities. In Volume Two, published in 2019, we had 60 stories, featuring more than 20 cities across the world. We moved from the macro to the micro, from nations to neighbourhoods, countries to communities. The roll call of leading thinkers we called on covered so many subjects - architecture, urban planning, property development, land use strategy, public policy, retail, hospitality, technology, ageing, and more. Together they showed what can be achieved via high-quality visioning, placemaking, planning and design.
