I’m excited to share our new publication titled: "Adaptability of Buildings: A Systematic Review of Current Research." Amidst the escalating impacts of climate change, from extreme floods to rising temperatures, understanding the adaptability and repurposing of buildings & its materials becomes paramount, particularly as the construction sector is responsible for about 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Passionate to innovate more sustainable construction solutions, this paper explores how repurposing buildings & its materials can drive sustainable construction. It discusses diverse perspectives, defines adaptability, explores its drivers, benefits, and challenges within the context of sustainable building designs. The paper also demonstrates the intersection between architecture, engineering and environment and their role in shaping adaptable solutions. This paper contributes to the conversations on measuring buildings’ adaptability, paving a way for future research and innovation for a resilient future. We had a sunny and mud-filled day of intensive workshops. The students practiced wattle and daub (applied on a bamboo lattice), hyperadobe and earth-based plasters. This experience is part of our course "Indigenous Technologies Towards Climate Solutions", bringing together Pratt Institute, Pratt Institute MS in Sustainable Environmental Systems, Pratt Historic Preservation and Pratt Urban Placemaking and Management students. The hands-on practice is complemented by lectures, readings and discussions covering the historic evolution and heritage value of these techniques, material characterization, technical aspects pertaining to execution and maintenance, and the importance of building with locally available and completely recyclable, non-toxic materials. We need a paradigm shift in the building materials industry across the globe. As I embarked on my Master's journey in Architecture, I found myself gravitating towards one topic in particular, one that I believe holds immense significance for the future of our field: sustainable architecture. Throughout my studies and extensive research, it has become abundantly clear that this domain demands not only the attention of architects but of humanity as a whole. The escalating heatwaves and the alarming shifts in climate patterns serve as stark reminders that we are at a critical juncture in our impact on the planet. If we continue on this trajectory, we risk jeopardizing our very existence. It is, therefore, imperative that we prioritize sustainable practices and incorporate them into the very fabric of our architectural ethos. This necessitates a multifaceted approach, encompassing: - Education and Awareness: Organizing workshops and seminars to disseminate knowledge about sustainable architecture among architects, engineers, and the general public is crucial. Fostering an understanding of the environmental implications of our designs is paramount to driving positive change. - Policy Implementation: Establishing robust environmental regulations and incentives is essential to promote sustainable practices within the construction industry. These measures should encompass energy efficiency standards, the utilization of eco-friendly materials, and the adoption of renewable energy sources. - Design Innovation: Embracing innovative architectural techniques that minimize environmental impact is paramount. This includes strategies such as passive heating and cooling systems, rainwater harvesting, and the integration of natural elements into building designs. By adopting these measures, we can collectively steer our architectural practices towards a more sustainable future. Meet Emily Newmarch “I’m passionate about seeing carbon reduction represented in more than just numbers.” “You can navigate different pathways and design solutions for projects by also looking at more qualitative aspects of that design,” says Victoria University PhD Candidate and WARREN AND MAHONEY Low Carbon Design Specialist, Emily Newmarch. “Embodied carbon is all about materials, and you can quantify those, but those materials also represent the building’s identity and express the design vision that contribute to the way the place is experienced. It’s exciting to be open to all of those conversations because it allows you to find really unique and innovative opportunities inside each project.” Emily has spent the last 2 years embedded in the Warren and Mahoney team as she completes a PhD that she describes as “an exploration of embodied carbon emissions through a poetic and practical lens.
