Call for involvement in water saving research interviews and case studies. We are currently running a project to review water saving incentive schemes, in the UK and globally, that encourage businesses to choose and fit water efficient products in their domestic settings, or install other measures such as leak detectors, rainwater harvesting or grey water reuse systems. We are particularly interested in businesses that operate in the Retail, Education, Accommodation and Food/Beverage sectors. If your business operates in one of those sectors, and you would be willing to take part in research interviews that we are conducting, please register your interest by emailing us at [email protected]. Alternatively, add your name and company in the comments section below 👇 and we'll be in touch. Interviews will be conducted by our partners Weir: The Agency during September. We are also keen to hear from you, if you know of any water saving incentive schemes (current or historical) that have or haven't worked. Please send a link to the scheme/case study in the comments section below. If you would like to be involved in either the interviews and/or by sending information on incentive schemes (and you are happy for us to do so) we will cite you in the final project report. One of the most striking sayings I have got in academy is “Get out of your office.” Leave your office, you - a modeller and an analyst, to see what is going on in the real world. This was exactly the first task of my project “Water-Emissions-Energy nexus” - developing a tool for assessing the prospects for circular water use in Kazakhstan.” I spent the period of autumn-spring 2022-2023 visiting industrial enterprises and government bodies in the Kazakhstani industrial city to interview stakeholders about their perceptions, challenges, and passions for implementing principles of the Circular Economy in their water management systems. After that, the identified factors were divided into SWOT groups followed by most interesting part - questionnaire distribution and evaluation. We asked participants to evaluate these factors: how relevant and emerging they are now and for further incorporation? The results are (finally) published in the Sustainable Water Resources Management journal by Springer Nature Group. A couple of insights are here: 1. Governmental agencies consider the availability of water resources to be a major strength in the region’s water use system, reducing the importance of other factors, especially the availability of recycled water systems and effective legislation. 2. Representatives of industrial enterprises consider the existence of water infrastructure (treatment plants and pipelines) being their major strength just by the fact of their existence. Governmental bodies and people from academia highlight the contrary perspective – the outdated and deteriorating conditions of the infrastructure are recognized as the major weakness. 3. Among the opportunities, almost unanimous rank is given to the implementation of infrastructure projects: repair of existing ones and construction of new treatment stations and pipelines. The factor “Opportunities for regeneration of associated resources from wastewater (energy, phosphorus, etc.)” received the minimum (!) score. 4. The influence of associated costs on modernization is the main threat according to opinions from almost everyone, except industry. The industry sees the main threat as increased water consumption, both now and in the future. 5. Representatives from governmental bodies consider corruption to be the main threat in the future to the implementation of Green Economy principles in the water resources management system 🙃. 6. Tariff increases are inevitable. And, with proper management, it would work. To gain more information, the full-text is available using the link below. Many thanks to Xuexiu JIA, Daulet Assanov, and Мадениет Елубай for their contribution and support.

A recent study in Advances in Water Science led by Academician Zhang Jianyun explores China's water dynamics and the concept of water peaking. China's water usage has shown phases of growth, stability, and decline, influenced by policies, technology, and reporting methods. Challenges of water scarcity persist, urging improved resource management. The study calls for a national water grid and optimized allocation to ensure water security and support high-quality development. Proactive planning is crucial for sustainable water management.

Our first WIA poll asked which area of innovation could have the biggest impact on the performance of the water sector in the next five years. The options are not entirely independent of each other but we did get some clear preference areas. With only a few weeks until the draft determinations come out from Ofwat we’ll soon know where each company will be investing from 2025 to 2030. Unsurprisingly with all the current media attention, Environmental impacts was the chosen by half of the voters. It will undoubtedly be a key focus of the next AMP. How to deliver the mandated infrastructure improvements efficiently, while managing net zero targets means that non-traditional solutions will need innovation . Over a quarter of voters (27%) selected reducing consumption. This is a critical requirement if we are to have sustainable water supplies into the future. Consumption has been on a downward trend but has been increasing since 2019. WIA member have solutions and skills that are critical for the consumption challenge. The planned Water Efficiency Fund will hopefully have a significant impact on this, and the proposed £75m Water Efficiency Campaign will be transformational, even if it did only attract 4% of voters. In previous AMPs leakage has been the top priority, with lots of media attention and ministerial intervention. With reductions of 15%-20% over this AMP (thanks Jeremy Heath for the stat). Lots of work has already gone into leakage reduction ecosystem and you can read more on the UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) website here: https://lnkd.in/gWGnZQx The next poll went live on the WIA linkedin page yesterday, please take a look and let us know your thoughts. We are always looking for new members and contributions to the Water Efficiency Fund consultation response that we are producing.
