💧Waterwise’s Policy Asks Of The New Government 💧 We face a water deficit of at least 4800 million litres per day (Mld) if we want to have a healthy environment, secure water supplies and future growth. Over 50% of this deficit needs to be met by reducing our water demand with at least 1000 Mld relying on new government policy. Today we set out our top 6 water saving policy priorities for the new government - together they have potential to reduce water use by more than 2000 Mld. It is vital that the new Government pushes ahead with policies to support a range of measures to reduce demand for water, ensuring a sustainable supply for future generations, the environment and the economy.

We have a new government, we have the prospect of real change, we have significant commitments to begin to end the sewage crisis and to hold water companies properly to account for their #pollutingforprofit, we have a promise of proper regulation and oversight of the water industry. We will give the new government time to begin to make good on its promises to properly protect our precious water environments. In the same way that change begins today, so does the accountability. This government has rightly set itself a high bar, we will continue to support those efforts and to hold those to account that might fall short on their commitments. Change begins with your new MPs, please engage with them on the water and sewage crisis, please challenge them if you feel that the government’s promises are not being fulfilled, please provide them with details of any water pollution incidents in your area and ask them to act. The change that we so desperately need doesn’t sit only with the new government, it is all of our responsibilities. #sewagescandal #sickofsewage #waterscandal

Almost every city in the United States is currently struggling with water resources and safe drinking water. According to a recent survey, about 9 million lead water pipelines in the U.S. must be replaced. The law allocated $15 billion to replace these old water distribution pipelines and that funding will continue to be available over the next several years. The sad fact is….. the poor performance of some of our UK water utilities to grapple with raw sewage is not just negative news in the UK. This article published by US based WaterOnLine does nothing to enhance the reputational value of the UK water sector overall as a secure and prudent investment. When will UK water Utility ownership start to realise that this global level of bad publicity effects the bottom line for everyone …. Modern ethical institutional Investors seek stability and shy away from business which draw bad publicity by constantly breaking the law and seemingly disregarding regulation of good governance. In the end good water supply and sanitation are hallmarks of a first world nation… Enough said…end of rant.

So, a B.C town estimated improvements to their municipal wastewater treatment would cost $14m. But regulations have gone up since planning started, and the project is now estimated at $35m. Why the hefty increase? The compliance checklist has more boxes—mostly to ensure the plant is carefully designed to accommodate local conditions and communities. But the more boxes, the more time and money. This is a central theme of water treatment in the age of water insecurity: less water, more regulations. That scissor effect puts municipalities and operators somewhere between a rock and a hard place: can’t change the externalities, so they look for relief in the P&L. But the P&L is stretched thin.
