🌱 The Effect of Vegetation on Soil Erosion 🌱 Surface water runoff from vegetation areas is significantly less than bare soil due to the increase in surface roughness, infiltration, and interception. In small watersheds covered with trees or grass, runoff usually does not exceed 10 to 20 percent of rainfall. In contrast, areas without vegetation can see runoff levels as high as 60 to 70 percent. As water moves across the bare soil surface, it erodes the soil and transports detached particles. Vegetation reduces this by reducing the volume of runoff, reducing water velocity and protecting the soil surface from water flow. Understanding and supporting the role of vegetation in soil conservation is very important. A  structural soil vault system otherwise known as soil cells are an underground matrix that is designed to provide space for soil and vegetation in urban areas where there is limited space for traditional landscaping and trees. Soil vaults in urban environments are typically made up of modular units that can be stacked on top of each other to create a multi-level structure. These structures are designed to provide adequate growing medium for plants and trees, while also providing stormwater management and infrastructure safety against tree roots, and other environmental benefits.
