Did you know that planting a tree can lower the temperature in your neighborhood and bring more water to the environment, among many other benefits? And here's a striking fact: there's almost 8 times more water stored in soil moisture than in all the world's rivers combined. Clearly, this is no trivial matter. This July 7th, as we remember Dr. Hugh Hammond Bennett, the pioneer of soil conservation, let's reflect on how soil care and tree planting drive the Water Positive initiative and positively impact our water resources. We owe much to Dr. Bennett's groundbreaking studies and dedication, which laid the foundation for our understanding of soil's crucial role in water management and environmental health. The #WaterPositive approach seeks not only to conserve but actively increase water availability. Soil plays a crucial role in this process: 🔎 Water retention: Healthy soil acts like a sponge, retaining more water and reducing runoff. 🔎 Aquifer recharge: It improves infiltration, contributing to groundwater replenishment. 🔎 Natural filtration: Healthy soils filter contaminants, improving water quality. 🔎 Hydrological cycle regulation: Groundwater buffers fluctuations between surface and atmospheric waters. 🔎 Fire mitigation: Well-hydrated landscapes are more resistant to wildfires. 🔎 Rain generation: Through evapotranspiration, deep-rooted trees release moisture from the subsoil, contributing to cloud formation. Who would have thought that trees improve soil health, soil improves water retention, and we'd end up talking about helping nature generate more freshwater? Thank you Dr. Hugh Hammond Bennett!!! #SoilConservation #agriculture #smartcities #Sustainability https://bit.ly/3WbDszF

Based on this, do you think that trees can play an important role in the ecosystem and the fight against global warming?

Trees are humanity's third lung, vital to our survival and the health of our planet. Yet, we relentlessly damage them in the name of unchecked, rapid consumption, sacrificing our natural lifelines for fleeting gains.

In nature, everything is connected, and technology is the way science can communicate within it. Building new neighborhoods, cities, even gardens can have a positive impact on water resources. I didn't know this before, but now I do, thank you!

One of the most important aspects when discussing green and blue infrastructure to enhance resilience in urban centers against extreme climatic events is to try to understand and mimic the relationship between water, vegetation, and its geomorphology in the pre-urbanization scenario. It is important that, before attempting to reforest cities, we do so in the right places, taking into consideration natural drainage lines and aquifer recharge points to maximize benefits with resource optimization.

Interesting. Buildings, roads, and the removal of trees and vegetation have dramatic impacts on ground and air temperature, CO2 absorption, transpiration, soil moisture retention, and rain. Thanks for posting!
