Blue Origin Joins the Big Leagues In a significant shift, the U.S. Space Force has awarded Blue Origin a share of its National Security Space Launch (NSSL) contracts, marking the first time a company other than SpaceX and United Launch Alliance (ULA) will launch military payloads. This move, part of the NSSL Phase 3 strategy, aims to increase competition and innovation in the military launch sector. The Space Force has adopted a "dual-lane" approach for its launch needs: Lane 1:  Focuses on "commercial-like" missions with higher risk tolerance. Blue Origin, SpaceX, and ULA are vying for a share of at least 30 missions valued at $5.6B over the next 5 years. Thank you to Aviation Week for hosting me to discuss Space Domain Awareness (SDA). What is SDA? Its the ability to rapidly detect, characterize, warn, attribute, and predict threats to space systems, and is one of the top priorities for U.S. Space Command. Those who are interested in learning about the key systems and programs supporting the U.S. Space Force's effort to attain the level of SDA necessary to counter growing threats from adversaries should listen in. Ensuring Longterm Sustainability of Space and Spectrum Hosted by the Space Data Association and the Satcoms Innovation Group (SIG) 🕰️ 14:35 📆 7th November 2024 📍 London, UK   The SDA and Satcoms Innovation Group will co-host a discussion surrounding the importance of protecting space and spectrum. As the amount of objects in orbit continues to rise, space is becoming increasingly congested and contested. Ensuring longterm sustainability means ensuring both safety of flight and continued and protected use of spectrum. This session will explore the tools and processes already in place, as well as asking what more commercial and military operators need to do to ensure longterm sustainability in an increasingly complex environment.

As part of the AUKUS trilateral security partnership, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia have embarked on an ambitious space surveillance project with the establishment of the Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability (DARC). This advanced network, comprising three space-tracking radars across these nations, is a groundbreaking initiative funded by the U.S. Space Force and developed by Northrop Grumman. DARC is designed to enhance space domain awareness by tracking, identifying, and characterizing objects in deep space, particularly in geosynchronous orbit. With the first site set to be operational in Exmouth, Western Australia by 2026, and completion of all three sites by 2030, DARC promises to significantly bolster space defense, traffic management, and global surveillance of both military and commercial satellites. ❝Nowadays, space-faring actors are competing not only for prestige but more importantly for strategic advantages, economic benefits and potential resources.❞ The past two decades have seen a renewed interest in space exploration. The previously established status quo in the sector has been disrupted, as private companies and emerging geopolitical players join what has traditionally been a bipolar space race.
