Here at Evolved Music Group, Thursdays are called Music Industry Throwback Thursdays. Each week, we look back at the biggest changes in the industry over the years. The music industry has undergone a remarkable metamorphosis in the last half-decade, reshaping how artists create, distribute, and monetise their music: 🎵 Streaming services have emerged as significant forces in music consumption, relegating CDs and physical sales to the annals of history. As a result, artists and labels have pivoted toward securing coveted playlist placements and harnessing the power of algorithmic recommendations to connect with a global audience. 📱 Simultaneously, social media and user-generated content have democratised music promotion. Independent musicians can now reach fans directly, building dedicated followings and circumventing traditional gatekeepers. Authenticity and engagement are the new currencies in this landscape. 💸 One of the most groundbreaking developments is the advent of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). NFTs have revolutionised music ownership and royalties, offering artists novel revenue streams and opportunities to engage with their fan base on a deeper level. 🚀 In this rapidly evolving terrain, adaptability, and digital literacy are no longer optional but imperative for success. Musicians, labels, and industry professionals must embrace change, stay attuned to emerging technologies, and seize opportunities in the ever-shifting music ecosystem. As we navigate these transformative times, let's celebrate the resilience and creativity of the music industry while remaining vigilant and prepared for whatever the future holds. #MusicIndustryThrowbackThursdays #MusicIndustryTrends #DigitalTransformation #MusicEvolution

Two recent deals highlight how much the industry has changed. In mid-November, consumer music making platform BandLab Technologies struck a deal with FUGA (the Downtown Music Holdings owned distributor) to release music and provide upstream opportunities for well-performing artists. And just last week, Gen AI music platform Boomy Corporation announced a partnership with Warner Music Group owned ADA to release their music, along with similar opportunities for Boomy artists who are trending. This deal makes a lot of sense for ADA. At the end of this month they are losing their biggest client, BMG - The New Music Company. Boomy won’t make up for that lost business here, but it’s something. At the scale Boomy operates (approaching 20m songs released) there are bound to be some breakout hits. This deal also makes sense for Boomy Corporation. Gen AI music platforms are met with a lot of skepticism, and Boomy is more credible than most, but partnering with an industry institution gives them further legitimacy. It’s worth reflecting on how much the industry’s response to new tech has changed. If this were 2004 instead of 2024, the majors would be suing these two platforms into oblivion. Now, they’re striking deals and providing real resources to the partnerships. #musicindustry #musicbusiness #musicAI #generatieveai

The 2024 Grammys affirmed the continuing evolution and resilience of the music industry and provided key insights for our growing engagement in the content sector. Resilience of Music: What’s old is new again. We see the revival of catalog songs in our playlists and on our awards shows. For instance, at this year’s Grammys, Tracy Chapman performed her 1988 single “Fast Car” alongside country artist Luke Combs, who recently achieved significant success with his cover of the song. “Fast Car” has also been covered by Jonas Blue, Sam Smith, Justin Bieber, and others. This example is a testament to the enduring appeal of great songs. New audiences continue to discover catalog songs as they engage with content across streaming services, social platforms, film, and TV. The long-term value of music creates compelling opportunities for both creating new music and investing in catalogs. The Enduring Value of Artist Development: The barriers to music creation have been lowered by the digital transformation of music production, distribution, and marketing. Today over one hundred thousand tracks are uploaded to streaming services daily, with the major labels distributing less than four percent of these tracks. Yet, at the Grammys, virtually all nominees in major categories are signed to major labels or established indies, demonstrating the role these platforms play in developing, promoting, and supporting artists. Put simply, labels have held enduring value by helping artists cut through the noise. Global Opportunities in Music: This year’s Grammys reflect the ongoing shift towards recognizing more diverse music, aligning with global consumer trends. Exciting growth is occurring in music genres and markets worldwide. In 2023, country music found crossover success on the pop charts, Latin artists continued to flourish in streaming, and genres like AfroBeats, K-pop, and J-pop continued to reach global audiences. These developments underscore the wide-ranging appeal and global opportunities in today’s music industry. As content industry investors, we view these trends as indicators of a promising future for music, with benefits extending to artists, writers, consumers, and companies. #grammys #privateequity #directlending #content #IP #musiccatalogs

In 2023, the global live music industry saw a remarkable 25% YOY increase in revenues, reaching over 33 billion USD. By 2030, this figure is expected to soar to nearly 52 billion USD. However, the lack of technological development has been the downfall of many industries and could threaten live music without the necessary infrastructure to support this growth. With revenues set to double from 2022 to 2030, innovation is crucial. Let's break down the live music industry into three key groups: venues, artists, and fans. • Venues depend on the synergy between artists and fans for their revenue. • Artists need venues to perform and fans to buy tickets, driving their income. • Fans rely on the connection between venues and artists for their entertainment. Despite these interdependencies, the industry lacks effective communication and relationship-building tools among these groups. That's where Juke comes in. I'm thrilled to be working alongside Javier, Elliot, and Carlos to develop this app. Together, we're building a platform that will support and enhance the live music experience for everyone involved.
