The future of AI music in Africa is not just about automation; it’s about preserving our rich cultural heritage, amplifying our diverse voices, and empowering a new generation of artists. Why AI Music Matters for Africa Cultural Preservation: Africa is home to thousands of languages and musical traditions. AI can play a crucial role in preserving and reviving these art forms, making them accessible to future generations. ✨ New publication ! 📚 Delighted to announce the publication of my latest article in Social Media Society: Being a “Global Music Platform”: Platform Work in Light-Tech Capitalism 🌍 Abstract : While the literature on music digital platforms has focused mainly on the consequences of production and consumption, few works have looked at platformization from the perspective of companies active in the music business. Drawing on an ethnographic inquiry of Sofar Sounds—a London-based company that organizes intimate and secret concerts in unconventional spaces—I introduce platform work to explore the kinds of practices in which platforms engage. I identify three operations in Sofar Sounds’ platform work: the incorporation of Sofar Sounds concerts into digital devices; its financing by venture capital (VCs) funds; and the activation and generification of its global community. In conclusion, I argue that being a platform involves organizational practices and that studying these practices shifts our attention beyond a few limited successful companies. This wasn’t just watching a performance; it was participating in an event where the boundary between virtual and physical was seamlessly blurred. What’s most fascinating is the reaction of the fans. They left the event exclaiming they had “just met Olivia Rodrigo,” as authentic and emotional connection facilitated by the holographic experience. This wasn’t about seeing a projection of Olivia; it was about feeling her presence, engaging with her energy, and experiencing her music in a way that felt as real as any live concert, if not more. This leap in technology represents a new era for live performances and fan interactions. Imagine concerts where artists can perform simultaneously in multiple cities around the globe, reaching more fans than ever before without the physical toll of touring. Picture fan meet-and-greets where distance no longer prevents personal interaction, allowing for a connection that transcends geographical limitations. Olivia Rodrigo’s holoportation event is just the beginning. As this technology evolves, the possibilities for how artists connect with their fans are endless. It hints at a future where live events are more inclusive and accessible, where the magic of music and the warmth of connection are not bound by the constraints of physical presence. This is the future of live performance, a future where every fan has a front-row seat to the magic, no matter where they are in the world.
