The report titled ‘China Automotive Market Development Forecast Report 2024’ shows that from January to November 2023, China's automotive market sales reached 26.938 million units, an increase of 10.8% year-on-year. Sales of new energy vehicles were particularly significant, reaching 8.304 million units, a year-on-year increase of 36.7%. The report forecasts that China's auto market will continue to grow in 2024, with total sales expected to reach 31 million units, up 3% year-on-year. The new energy vehicle market is expected to expand further, with sales projected to reach 11.5 million units, a 20% year-on-year increase. However, the market is also facing challenges, including the sustainability of economic recovery, consumer confidence, uncertainty in the global trade environment, and price trends. To address these challenges, the auto industry should focus on expanding domestic demand, consolidating the fundamentals of foreign trade and foreign investment, promoting the construction of ecological civilization and green, low-carbon development, and maintaining the continuity and stability of policies to boost market confidence. Automotive Lightweighting Becomes a Hot Trend: Top Group Makes Major Moves, Ningbo Listed Companies Increase Investment Under the backdrop of dual carbon goals, lightweighting has become the targeted "bullseye" for an increasing number of automotive component enterprises. On the evening of December 12, Top Group announced that it plans to raise no more than 4 billion yuan through a private placement. The funds will be used for projects including the production of 1.2 million sets of lightweight chassis systems and 600,000 sets of automotive interior functional components annually in Chongqing, and a project in Ningbo Qianwan to produce 2.2 million sets of lightweight chassis systems annually, among 8 other projects. The automotive industry is Ningbo's largest, with 19 A-share listed companies and another, Xingyuan Zhuomeng, set to list on December 15. Top Group's layout in vehicle chassis lightweighting includes subframes, suspensions, control arms, and more. Magnesium Alloy Castings in the Automotive Field: In Early Stages with Immense Potential Magnesium alloy, with a short history of scaled application, presents significant growth potential in the automotive die-casting sector. China's development history of scaled magnesium alloy application is relatively recent, and the usage of magnesium alloy is transitioning from the introductory phase to the growth phase of its lifecycle. Currently, the production of magnesium alloy die castings accounts for a low proportion of the total die castings output. According to Yunhai Metals, China's per-vehicle magnesium usage is only 3-5 kg, compared to 15-20 kg in European and American cars, indicating substantial growth potential. We believe that magnesium alloy castings in the automotive field are still in the initial 0-1 phase of development, with the industry in its infancy and enormous future potential. As a major producer of automotive components, China's magnesium alloy automotive die-casting market capacity is expected to reach 689,000 tons and 1,241,000 tons in 2025 and 2030, respectively. Vehicle Lightweighting: Cars Geared Up with Lighter Frames Stepping into the workshop of Shandong Hualu's annual production of 150,000 sets of aluminum alloy lightweight automotive bodies and parts, one observes neatly stacked raw materials, machines operating at full capacity, and workers diligently collaborating in their respective roles, creating a bustling scene. The project, with a total investment of 1.03 billion yuan and covering 471 acres, produces 150,000 sets of aluminum alloy lightweight automotive bodies and parts annually. According to Liu Deshi, compared to steel, aluminum alloy offers corrosion resistance and lighter weight, making it highly suitable for manufacturing vehicle bodies. "Especially in the era of rapid development of new energy vehicles, lightweight technology - energy-saving, green, and low-carbon - is crucial. It not only reduces the overall vehicle weight, lowering fuel and electricity consumption and saving on usage costs, but also enhances vehicle safety and driving performance, marking the future trend in automotive production," Liu explains.
