📢 Announcement: Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd of November 2023 were marked by the official kick-off the Horizon Europe REFORMERS project, coordinated at Vrije Universiteit Brussel by Prof. Thierry Coosemans. This 5-year project focuses on the development, realization and roll-out of the so called “Renewable Energy Valleys” (REVs). The REVs aim to increase energy security and accelerating the green transition in Europe while they contribute to the #REPowerEU goals of 1) ramping up the green energy production, 2) diversifying our energy supplies and 3) reducing the dependence on fossil fuels. REFORMERS’ Flagship Valley is characterized by the presence of existing natural gas infrastructure, a bio-energy plant, and the localization of Energy Innovation Park Alkmaar to foster renewable energy innovations. Alongside five functional blocks, called Renewable Energy Valley Tracks (REVTs), the Flagship Valley will: 1. demonstrate renewable energy technologies to increase the RES (REVT#1) 2. convert, store, and distribute renewable energy carriers (such as biomethane, electricity, hydrogen, and heat) (REVT#2) 3. replace fossil fuel usage for end users (REVT#3) 4. monitor, optimize and control the energy flows (REVT#4) 5. incorporate financial, legal, and social dimensions (REVT#5) 6. contribute to Alkmaar’s overall mission of 100% sustainable energy target by 2050. The kick-off meeting was organized and hosted by Vrije Universiteit Brussel and by the New Energy Coalition, Flagship Valley Coordinator, in Alkmaar. The Alderman of the Municipality of Alkmaar, also an active Partner of the Consortium, welcomed the representatives of 28 Partners from 10 countries. ⚠️ Do you know the hidden dangers hiding in your e-waste? Visit the University of Graz, Austria, on Friday, September 27th, for the European Researchers’ Night organized by Life is Science, and visit the hands-on station hosted by Chukwuebuka Eze. Chukwuebuka’s research sheds light on the dangerous chemicals released through informal e-waste recycling practices. 🗓 When: Friday, September 27th 📍 Where: University of Graz, Hauptgebäude (Universitätsplatz 3a) 🕒 Time: 15:00 - 20:00 🎯 For ages: 14 and up ⏳ Duration: 15 min The project highlights the environmental and health impacts of e-waste, particularly in West Africa, where much of Europe’s electronic waste ends up. Through animal-free alternative methods, Chukwuebuka is investigating the chemical mixtures present in e-waste and the risks they pose—not just to local populations, but to the entire planet. Learn how these harmful chemicals, released from improper e-waste recycling, affect communities and the environment, and discover how responsible industrial production and chemical safety are critical for planetary health.
