Middle class parents have debts. Middle class parents have financial responsibilities too. Some are taking care of their extended families like myself and others. Some pay every month for funeral covers because they are the only ones who are better off in their families therefore everything that speaks finances is on their shoulders. Some take care of families both sides. Some takes care of their deceased family members' kids. You apply for a study loan for your child you don't qualify because of your debts. You apply for financial assistance for your kid/s , you don't qualify because you are earning a salary that's above the threshold. Parents end up taking their kids to tertiary institutions based on the affordability and not institutions of their kids' choices. It's a dog eat dog world out there. It's rough and it's not a joke. It's a tough journey out there. THE PAIN OF A PARENT WHOSE CHILD WILL BE SPENDING A YEAR AT HOME BECAUSE PARENTS CAN'T AFFORD FEES JUST BECAUSE OF BEING ABOVE THE THRESHOLD.

Should your adult children pay rent when living in your home? My answer really depends on the situation. If your adult child is living with you, working a job, and attempting to save money for something big, like the down payment on a home, consider helping them out by foregoing rent. If, however, your adult child is working, not saving, and living off of you, charging them rent may be a great way to teach them what it would be like out in the real world. There are consequences to not managing finances. This does not mean that you can’t save a portion of the rent to return to them at a later date. In this case, charging rent may create a perfect learning opportunity. #financialadvise #financialliteracy #financeontario

CEO and Founder of Money Buddies & Benefit Buddies. Chair of Leeds & West Yorkshire Debt Advice Network.
With Universal Credit at £91 for over 25's, there just isn't enough to pay for: Food/gas/electricity/water/phone (for emergency) let's see: Gas = £25 per week (mines £50) Electricity = £35 per week (mines £50) Water = £10 per week (mines £15) Phone = £5 per week (mines a sim only) Travel = £20 per week (to pick up kids) I've spent £95 so far... I've got -£4 left for: Food for me and the kids I share care with Car insurance (for kids) Car MOT Car repairs Clothes (my kids are growing and need shoes). I will do without. Hair cuts (my son needs his cutting, I can leave mine and my little girls) I can maybe save £5 on the phone, that will leave me with £2 If I happen to be under 25, I am completely screwed! Get a Job you might say! I have a disability and employers don't want me! I've tried! I'm now depressed and suicidal because I can't cope and provide for my children. Shouldn't have had kids then, if you can't look after them! I could look after them. I was in a happy family relationship then my partner left me! Now what? Let's start by going to a food bank - but that's only a temporary option! Edited note: I never mentioned TV licence or access to the Internet to apply for jobs or do school work! moneybuddies.org.uk Standing up against poverty (including child poverty), deprivation, isolation (including social isolation)!
