As we enter Black History Month, the profound words of Frederick Douglass resonate deeply: "It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men." This powerful quote encapsulates the core of DBG's mission, where we are committed to nurturing resilient leaders within our youth. In the spirit of Black History Month, Douglass' wisdom prompts us to ponder the significance of investing in the comprehensive development of our children, especially those navigating challenges. At DBG, we go beyond academic support, offering mentorship, guidance, and avenues for personal growth. We not only support our youth but also take our adults on their own identity journeys to question historical misinformation and biases. We know that the key to long-term impact on youth development starts with the adult. During this month dedicated to honoring Black history and beyond, we recognize the importance of inspiring every child, irrespective of background, to thrive. How can society ensure that each young mind receives the support and resources needed to overcome obstacles on the path to success? Share your thoughts in the comments, and let's collectively build a brighter future for all. 💬🌟 #BlackHistoryMonth #DBG #BuildingStrongChildren 💛🖤

As we embark on Black History Month, I reflect on my commitment and achievements as a school leader dedicated to closing the achievement gap. Having spent over two decades in urban schools, I ensure that when a teacher describes a student as "doing fine," it extends beyond completing work – it signifies true mastery of grade-level standards. As both a leader and a parent, advocating fiercely for my African American son and others is imperative, as it involves breaking down barriers for equity, higher expectations, and structures that provide resources for genuine achievement. In the words of Doug Lemov in "Teach Like a Champion," "Equity starts with achievement." He emphasizes that a classroom must operate as if young people within it are capable of greatness for it to be just. Lemov's insight underscores the importance of pushing students to work harder with warmth, grace, and humanity, as academic achievement becomes the enabling engine of equity and social justice. As we celebrate Black History Month, let's honor the contributions of Black leaders, teachers, and mentors, both past and present, in the ongoing fight for equality and true achievement. 📚🌟 #BlackHistoryMonth #EquityInEducation #AchievementForAll

Did you know that although Black History month is only 48 years old, its foundations go back to the year 1915? Dr. Carter G. Woodson founded what is now the Association for African American Life and History in 1915 and in 1916 a historical journal to capture findings and achievements of African Americans that researchers were uncovering. Fast forward a decade and after working with civic organizations and with his own association shouldering the majority of the responsibility, the press release for the first Negro History Week was sent out in 1926. The 2nd week of February was selected because it encompassed the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas, two Americans who played a prominent role in shaping black history. 50 years later in 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month and urged the US populous to not only join him in tribute but "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history." I challenge you to take this month to read and reflect. I challenge you to take time every day to learn about the achievements and contributions of so many great Americans that have often time been overlooked. We must learn from the past in order to effectively move into the future. Celebrating Carter G. Woodson 🥇 A pioneer in recognizing the profound contributions of Black Americans, Woodson established Black History Month in 1976 to ensure their historic achievements are acknowledged and celebrated. Born in 1875 to former slaves, Woodson's journey from working in West Virginia coal mines to becoming the second Black American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University is a testament to his relentless pursuit of education and equality. Despite facing barriers, he authored several influential books on Black history and founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1915, laying the foundation for the scholarly exploration of neglected aspects of African American history. Woodson's enduring legacy is felt each February when we honor Black History Month, a tribute to his vision and dedication. His creation of Negro History Week, later expanded to Black History Month, ensures that the stories of Black Americans are woven into the fabric of our collective consciousness. Though he passed away in 1950, Woodson's impact resonates through generations, empowering Black communities and enlightening others on the richness of Black American history. Let's continue to honor his legacy by amplifying Black voices and celebrating their invaluable contributions to our shared history. 🖤 #CarterGWoodson #BlackHistoryMonth #Legacy #diversethoughts #diversevoices#MBRmag #business #minorityviews #blackbusiness #blackexcellence #leadership #diversity #inclusion #leaders
