The recent #coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and the continuous spread of nosocomial infections emphasize the urgent need for new disinfecting surface methodologies in health facilities. We consider that an in-depth understanding of the potential of #UV-#LED as a decontamination technology can provide a direction for new disinfection strategies with high efficiency and reliability and without producing unsafe by-products when compared to traditional chemical sterilization agents.  UVC-LED lamps emitting at 280 nm and 275 nm could inactivate 99.99% of the #microbial #indicators on glass, steel and polished wood when applied for 20 min, at a 0.5 m distance. It was possible to observe that the exposure time needed to inactivate the microbial indicators tested can be decreased by reducing the exposure distance. The ability of the cells to recover from UV-induced damage was apparently observed in #P.aeruginosa. In #B.subtilis recovery of vegetative cells after UV exposure was most probably related to the presence of endospore. In both situations, the inactivation rate remained at 99.99% after 24 h of incubation.

Here are a few key points to understand: 𝐂𝐫𝐲𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐮𝐦: This tiny parasite has a hard outer shell, making it one of the most chlorine-resistant bugs. It's often found in contaminated water and can cause serious illness. 𝐆𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐚 Similar to Cryptosporidium, Giardia cysts are also resistant to chlorine. This parasite can cause gastrointestinal issues. 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐕𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬: While many viruses are killed by chlorine, some, like Hepatitis A, require higher doses or more prolonged exposure to be effectively neutralized. 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐦𝐬 These are slimy layers that bacteria create on surfaces. Once bacteria are in a biofilm, they become much more complicated for chlorine to kill. 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬: Some bacteria can form tough, protective spores that are very resistant to chlorine. These include germs like Bacillus and Clostridium species. 🔬 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐈𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: Safe water is crucial for our health, but we need to understand that chlorine isn't a catch-all solution.
