June is Menโs Health Month! This annual observance encourages men and boys to be proactive in their health by implementing healthy living decisions. This year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) is focusing on improving health outcomes for racial and ethnic minority and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) men through its theme Be the Source for Better Health: Improving Health Outcomes Through Our Cultures, Communities, and Connections. This theme calls on each of us to better understand how the unique environments, cultures, histories, and circumstances (known as social determinants of health, or โSDOHโ) of racial and ethnic minority and AI/AN men impact their overall health. https://lnkd.in/gjwR6HwM

I am happy to share that our paper "The Changing Relationship between Body Weight and Longevity in High- and Low-Income Countries" has been accepted for publication in Economics and Human Biology. This collaboration with Joanna Kopinska (Rome La Sapienza), and Jay Bhattacharya, and Grant Miller (Stanford University) has been a profound journey into the evolving global landscape of body weight standards and longevity. Our work expands on Hans Waaler and Robert Fogel's foundational studies by examining how the relationship between BMI and longevity differs dramatically across countries with varying income levels. Our findings highlight that the percentage of a population's body weight above mortality-minimizing levels isn't necessarily higher in countries with greater rates of traditionally defined overweight and obesity. Surprisingly, we found that a larger percentage of the population in low-income countries might be at an unhealthy weight compared to current standards. By integrating concepts like Waaler curves, health technology, and the complex interplay between mortality and obesity, we offer new insights for public health policies and interventions. These discoveries underscore the importance of tailoring health standards to reflect the diverse health technologies and challenges populations worldwide face. Current bodyweight classi๏ฌcation standards such as โoverweightโ (BMI 25-30) and โobeseโ (BMI 30 ) do not re๏ฌect important di๏ฌerences across populations and di๏ฌerences in access to health technology. Our results in this paper demonstrate that BMI thresholds corresponding to unhealthy body weight or mortality risk are not universal. Understanding these di๏ฌerences is critical, in turn, for understanding the population health implications of evolving anthropometric status worldwide. Rising body weights, even conditional on height, may not unambiguously indicate a decline in population health status. #EconomicsAndHumanBiology #BMI #Longevity #HealthTechnology #Obesity #PublicHealthPolicy

An independent evaluation has found that TILDA produces high quality research output, has had a significant public policy impact, and has helped inform debate and public discourse on ageing. A few key metrics from the evaluation: As a result of TILDAโs work, older age is framed in the media as a positive life stage, and one that should be celebrated. TILDAโs research is ranked in the top 25% most cited publications worldwide. TILDAโs research has informed four key policy areas: -Impact of COVID-19 on older people & policy concerns -Health and wellbeing -Healthcare service utilisation -Social issues Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eCEm8vzn Health Research Board (HRB)

๐ฌ๐ Exciting Insights from XPRIZE EVP, Health Jamie Justice, Ph.D. on Aging and Healthspanย ๐๐ฌ As our global population ages, the gap between life expectancy and health-adjusted life expectancy presents profound personal, social, and economic challenges. #XPRIZEHealthspan and Dr. Jamie Justice's latest World View article for Nature Aging reveals an urgent need for investment in geroscience research to close this 8โ12-year gap, highlighting the potential of extending healthspan to not only improve quality of life, but also unlock trillions in economic value. Here are some key takeaways: ๐ฉบ The worldโs population aged 65 is expected to soar, stressing healthcare systems and economies. ๐ฉบ Extending healthspan by just one year could be worth US $38 trillion, emphasizing the immense value of delaying biological aging. ๐ฉบ Over 75 interventions have been identified that extend healthspan and lifespan in model systems, from dietary interventions to genetic manipulations. ๐ฉบ The XPRIZE Healthspan competition, with a $101 million prize, aims to catalyze breakthroughs in geroscience, moving promising interventions towards clinical trials. Dr. Justice not only spotlights the economic imperative, but also the societal benefits of innovative solutions for healthy aging. It's a call to action for researchers, policymakers, and the public to engage in a radically collaborative effort for a future where everyone can enjoy a healthier, more vibrant old age. We are immensely grateful to Nature Aging Journal for their exceptional support in featuring our XPRIZE Healthspan competition. ๐ Read the full article for a deep dive into how we can bridge the gap between living longer and living healthier: https://rdcu.be/dwCD2 Let's contribute to shaping a world where aging is about gaining more healthy years, not just more years. Emerging healthcare technologies have contributed to markedly improved living standards and life expectancy. However, the gap between lifespan and healthspan is approximately 9 years. To address aging-related challenges, policy-centered interventions and digital health innovation are employed to promote healthy aging and related preventive care. In this blog post series from Next Sequenceยฎ , the role of digital health innovation and other advanced technologies including AI is discussed in detail. #Longevity #HealthyAging #Healthspan #Aging
