"How to deal with disempowering feelings?" I notice this question a lot in myself and my work, with immigrants and people who live among cultures.
It's easy to say that all feelings are valid and everyone is equal. But what if the disempowering feeling is brought by perceived inequality, for example when many immigrants have to go through visa issues (or dramas) and the local residents do not have to experience it at all? And what if the disempowering feeling ends up making us feel small, creating trauma and becoming self-fulfilling prophecies?
My humble opinion is that "all feelings are valid, but some can be changed for the better". Every single feeling should be acknowledged for its existence, particularly the traumatic ones: when one feels hurt and the world treats them unfairly (which sometimes it does), it is so important for that to be fully embraced before it can be changed (if needed at all).
What helps after the acknowledgment is looking at the situation calmly and seeing what are the facts, what are our perceptions. In our example of visa experiences of immigrants, the fact can be that immigrants need to get visas, but the local residents don't. The hurt, disempowered reaction can be: "the system works against me and I feel like a second-class citizen."
The empowered perception can however be: "the system is unfair, but I will not let it stop me from what I can achieve. I'm not only not less than others, but I have even more resilience. By overcoming challenges I am in fact able to contribute to a fairer world in the future."
Do you see that reframing our experience can give us completely different feelings, and therefore bring completely different behaviors and results into our lives? :)
Disempowering feelings unfortunately affect more women, ethnic minorities, LGBTQ people and immigrants. Even though disempowerment is often triggered by facts, it is entirely up to us whether we feel this disempowerment at all or not. After acknowledgment and reframing, we can transform all disempowering feelings into empowering feelings.
