DWR is celebrating Pollinator Week! 🌼🐝 Pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, are essential links in the food webs that support healthy habitats and wildlife. By pollinating plants, they ensure the growth of fruits and seeds, which helps maintain thriving ecosystems. Pollinators and other native insects are also vital food sources for wildlife. Did you know that 96% of songbirds feed insects to their young? Bugs are the original bird food! As part of our Wildlife Action Plan, we work with partners across Virginia to conserve wildlife and their habitats. 🌱GARDEN CHALLENGE: Texas Wildlife Association #ConservationTakeover Tip is to garden thoughtfully by considering how species and plants are connected when making landscape decisions. For example, you can plant corn and squash together because corn stalks provide squash vines the perfect trellis to grow. 🌽 Diverse, native plants make for resilient habitats. By adding diverse, native plants to the landscape we not only protect our natural resources (such as water consumption) but we create diverse ecosystems for native wildlife.

🤔Did you know that wildlife plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems? Animals like elephants, beavers, and cheetahs help shape their environments in essential ways. Here’s how they contribute: 🐘Elephants: Help maintain open landscapes by uprooting trees. 🦫Beavers: Create wetlands that support diverse species. 🐆Cheetahs: Regulate prey populations, promoting plant growth. Protecting these species ensures the health and balance of entire ecosystems. Want to learn about other conservation topics? Christ driven influencer, thought leader and advocate for a "Reverence for Life" , the ethos that is the love of Jesus bestowed liberally and universally. Blogger and Author of the For Our Friends the Animals quartet.
#reverenceforlife #wildlife #coyotes #love #mercy My dear friends in a reverence for life, I have often expounded on the dangers involved in wildlife advocacy; to wit, the snare and delusion of arguing on behalf of any being based on its “value” to Homo sapiens. The essay infra, again although undoubtedly well intentioned, provides another clear example of the value argument peril. The piece attempts to provide an apologia for coyotes, a species admittedly much misunderstood and accordingly much maligned and maltreated. To return to my penchant for deducing the general quandary from one citation, here is our representative except: “In our public outreach, we make it clear that coyotes are worth protecting. They play a critical role in healthy ecosystems, providing a range of free, natural ecological services to urban, suburban and rural communities. They help to control disease transmission by keeping rodent populations in check, curtailing tick-borne diseases like Lyme. And they consume animal carcasses (keeping the environment clean), increase plant and animal biodiversity and disperse seeds. But their value goes beyond their role in the ecosystem….” The article goes on to wax fondly over the animal’s euphonious ability to vocalize as yet another compelling element in its defense. My dear friends, the flaw in these arguments is evident: namely, subtract the evidence of worth to mankind and the rationale for guarding a creature from human depredation evaporates rapidly and completely. A reverence for life is a life affirming ethos averring that every denizen of our common home possesses inborn worth and value, that no such denizen may be viewed merely as a means to some human end, that we humans are charged with a mission to protect and enhance life, all lives, every actuality that crosses our path. To view the merit of a being solely or overwhelmingly from our perspective is to be driven not by a reverence for life, but rather by damning anthropocentrism, a reverence for human existence only. It is incumbent upon us to view ourselves not as the raison d'être of this globe, but as a species which, by dint of extraordinary evolutionary good fortune, incurs a duty to share that fortune with all other beings by protecting and promoting their existence. Every decision we make, our entire deportment, must be predicated upon a reverence for life. This ethos is at its core the love of Jesus made universal. We are called to love our neighbors as ourselves and to esteem each inhabitant of earth to be our neighbor. That is a love we must bestow regardless of whether we enjoy the vocalizations of that inhabitant, regardless of the beneficial role we selfishly believe them to play on our behalf. Our role is to love. That is a reverence for life.

The UK’s wildlife is continuing to decline according to the State of Nature Report 2023 📉 Since 1970, pollinators such as bees, hoverflies and moths, have decreased by 18% on average. 54% of flowering plants across Great Britain have decreased in where they are found. But the reasons for the declines are clear. From our BeeWalk recording scheme, we have never had a better understanding of how the UK’s bumblebees are doing 🐝 Learning from our projects across the country, we know what actions to take to help #bumblebees. Together, we can fix this 💚 https://ow.ly/lgzn50PQyXB #BeeTheChange #StateOfNature #RestoreNatureNow
