Albert Heijn To Improve Animal Welfare Standard In Pig Supply Chain Dutch retailer Albert Heijn plans to invest further in its #pig supplychain to support the implementation of stricter animal welfare requirements. From 2025, additional requirements will apply to the Beter Leven 1 Star quality mark, including more daylight in the stables and creating space for freedom of movement of animals. The investment will see Albert Heijn helping #pigfarmers implement these measures to meet these additional requirements. A premium of up to 6 euro cents per kilogram within the existing price system will apply to pig farmers with whom Albert Heijn has a long-term partnership, the retailer added. Ellen Bien, director of the Dierenbescherming (animal protection organisation) stated, "This step by Albert Heijn is good news for animal welfare. The supermarket chain indicates that it endorses the importance of improved animal welfare and that it is prepared to pay for it.  "This is of great importance for farmers, so that they can also recoup the necessary investments and we can thus take steps towards a better animal welfare environment. #animalhusbandry." For years, Albert Heijn has been collaborating with almost 1,200 farmers and growers in the Netherlands as part of the Stichting Beter voor Natuur & Boer & Boer (Better for Nature and Farmer) programme. The company draws up chain-specific agreements with suppliers about the revenue model, animal welfare, nature and purchase guarantee. We all know that “bad press” sells. Sadly, through generations of conditioning, we have been wired for drama. Printing good news stories in the media won’t sell newspapers….so who gets the runs in the media? Activists. There are often media pieces floating around about mistreatment of animals etc. In fact, I am still getting hammered every day by activists after I put up the video of the sheep sale at Wagga last month! Often these people are not curious to learn, they have their beliefs and that’s that. But as someone who spends 90% of her time on farm with people running businesses, raising livestock, I have only ever witnessed good stuff. In business, ill treatment of anything, doesn’t help anyone’s bottom line! Australian cattle and sheep are ethically and humanely processed to strict industry standards. The Australian processing sector worked with industry and the RSPCA to contribute to standards and guidelines to meet the requirements for the provision of good animal welfare standards. The Australian Animal Welfare Certification System (AAWCS) is an independently audited certification program. In the sixth post in this series we introduce our Work Package 3 leader, Dr. Julia Malchow. 🐥 Julia, can you introduce yourself please? I am an animal welfare scientist focused on poultry. Since 2015 I have been working on behavior and housing environment of broilers and also to a small extent on laying hens at the Institute of Animal Welfare and Animal Husbandry in Celle (Germany). My personal interests are particularly in the field of animal welfare, automation and environmental sustainability in broiler chickens.   🐤 What is your role in BroilerNet? I have the pleasure of leading work package 3 “Animal Welfare” in this project. I am very happy about this exciting role, because I may initiate the interaction of the different actors, but also co-organise. Furthermore, I am looking forward to the lively exchange with new and old contacts. The project aims to create and support a European network between different actors from industry and science of the broiler sector. The exchange between different countries as well as the aspect of “thinking outside the box” are for me juicy. Additionally, I like to meet new people and interact with them.   🐓 What will broilernet bring to the sector? BroilerNet intends to bring together stakeholders from different geographical areas in Europe, so I think that an exchange of experience, knowledge and innovations will be achieved and we will be able to learn from each other. New solutions to existing and new challenges for the broiler sector can emerge from the different national and international workshops. This network can improve the European broiler sector.   🐔 Can you introduce your co-WP leader and industry partner? My Co-WP leader is Karin von Deylen. She is an animal scientist and is employed by Bundesverband Bäuerlicher Hähnchenerzeuger e.V. (BVH), which is also our German industry partner in this project. Extended criteria on sustainability, animal welfare, and continuous improvement at the producer level. Changes to General Regulations: 1. Self-assessment includes comments for non-applicable and non-compliant criteria. 2. 10% of unannounced audits are now included in the original number of certification audits. 3. Three-year cycle rule with an annual on-site audit, reducing the content of the checklist to applicable points and shortening on-site audit duration. Transition Timeline: - IFA v6 Smart is obligatory from January 1, 2024. No further audits against IFA v5.2 may be conducted after this date. - IFA v6 GFS (relevant for Fruit & Vegetables and Aquaculture) becomes obligatory three months after recognition by GFSI is achieved.
