This month we're introducing Rachel Perry, one of our incredible Account Directors 🌟 How did you get into PR? While I was studying at university, I had the opportunity to take part in a communications internship over the summer months. Really enjoyed it and decided to make it a career! What’s a skill you have learnt working in PR that everyone should master? One of the most important skills that you learn when working in PR is stakeholder management. You’re in constant communication with your colleagues, your clients, journalists and other third parties, and not everyone is going to work in the same way that you do. Learning how to manage these relationships effectively will lead to more valuable engagement and better results! Is there any advice you’d give to someone looking to start a role in PR? I’d urge anyone starting out in the PR industry to just be curious, be engaged and be proactive! You won’t know everything on day 1 and that’s absolutely normal. The key is to get fully immersed in your clients’ worlds and don’t just complete tasks – asks questions and try to understand why we are doing them. Fun fact about you? Today's instalment of 'things I wish I knew' comes from Tom Ingoldby, Velvet's senior account director. Check our page again tomorrow for the next tip! * * That we’re all (kind of) making it up as we go along * * I sort of fell into PR - it wasn’t part of my life plan. I did a Masters in Film, filmed a sitcom pilot as part of my dissertation and wanted to be a script writer. I was obviously going to write the new ‘Friends’. It was just a matter of when. So to fill some time during my post-uni summer, I got an internship at FRANK PR. The reason? My mate did it and said it was fun. So I thought, why not? And I loved it. Forget ‘Friends’, I was all about FRANK. A couple more internships followed and then I got a proper, big boy job at Chameleon.Turns out I loved b2b tech PR. And the rest, as they say, is history. The point is, none of this was part of the plan. The sitcom script still remains half-written, I’ve dipped my toes into FMCG PR and then back to tech, and now I’m part of the SLT at Velvet - where I believe I have found my home. All the time, learning as I go, working things out, making mistakes. A bit of bullshitting, a bit of false confidence, a bit of cheekiness but always a goal to get better, to progress and to learn. And the more you progress, your lack of original lifeplan means less and less. My colleagues over the years have ranged from ex-Royal editors for tabloids, to former rock stars who toured with Metallica, and even someone who invented an odourless dog poo bag. But what did they all have in common? They never planned to be in PR. Did it matter? No - they were all great at their jobs which they learned on the go. Last Thursday we wrapped up our summer 2024 internship program. As I am every semester when they complete their time with us, I’m sad to see them leave, but excited to see what they do next. I truly believe having an internship (or two) is an integral part of a college student’s growing period. Not only do internships allow you the chance to immerse yourself in a role that you may hope to one day pursue full-time, but you’re also gaining knowledge, experience, and learning from a group of individuals who have all at one time been where you are. One of the biggest takeaways from an internship is the connections you make; they are key. My greatest piece of advice has always been to talk to as many people as you can. Informational interviews can be just as powerful as the interviews you take for a job. Why? Because when talking to industry professionals, you’re gaining valuable insights which in turn can help you make informed career decisions. Something I learned from our interns this summer; you don’t always need to be in person to form genuine offline connections. Throughout the summer, a friendship formed between our two social media interns, one that will surpass their time with us. It was a reminder that you can still create meaningful connections at work without having to sit right beside someone. I cannot tell you how happy that friendship makes me. Currently, JMG Public Relations is comprised of mostly former interns turned full-time employees. That speaks volumes to the program we have. As we prepare to welcome in a new semester of interns, I look forward to meeting a new group of students while I continue to watch our former students fly! I just spoke to a friend's daughter, a rising college senior about to begin a PR agency internship. She asked some great questions, one of which was who do I think are the best PR people and why (their backgrounds). I've been in the industry a fairly long time and have worked with lots of comms people--some great, some good, some average, some not-so-average. The best PR people I've worked with include two former segment producers for local network TV affiliates, a former broadcast business reporter, a former ski instructor and a college soccer player who studied accounting. Why do I think they're the best? It's because they know how to quickly craft concise and compelling stories, and they're incredibly pragmatic. #PR #publicrelations #careers

I’m celebrating the one-year mark today! 2023: Started as a Post-Graduate PR Intern 2024: In an AAE role in the brand department My grasp of #PR has evolved so much since I started. Who knew I’d be touching account management, influencer relations, traditional media, and event planning? As a Black man in PR, it’s meant being on the front lines of industry change. I‘ve never let a job title dictate my impact and you shouldn’t either - intern to VP. Seeing the Transport for London Stuart Ross Communications Internship open for applications, especially after the attacks it received in the summer, is brilliant. If you're considering a career in public relations, please follow the link and consider applying. The scheme has been broadened to include individuals from all under-represented and under-served groups. It was established as a scientific fact that diverse agencies and public relations teams make better decisions and are better able to represent the public that they serve by Dr Larissa Grunig in the 1980s. The issue took more than 30 years to rise up the industry agenda. It's another example of the lag between theory and practice in public relations. Sarah Waddington CBE CDir ChartPR and I have spent ten years studying industry data related to diversity. Two critical areas require an intervention to shift public relations from an elite to a representative practice. 1) Widening entry requirements and recruiting more widely. This is the intervention addressed by Tfl and similar initiatives 2) Supporting mid-career practitioners from diverse backgrounds in securing management qualifications. This is the intervention addressed by Socially Mobile It will almost certainly take another 30 years to address this issue, but thanks to Matt Brown, Victoria Harrison-Cook MBE and the TfL team for continuing Stuart Ross' legacy and driving this critical intervention.
