𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐖𝐄𝐈𝐍 𝐃𝐔̈𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐋𝐃𝐎𝐑𝐅 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 In the next few days it's time for ProWein 2024; a 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 for the fair which has been the undisputed leader of international wine fairs for years and which today must redeem itself, given the under-performing 2023 edition. According to many, in fact, 𝐕𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬 could become the new main international wine fair, thus replacing ProWein in Düsseldorf. The latter would consequently return to being mainly a fair for the 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 and would act as a privileged meeting point for numerous markets in Northern and Eastern Europe. The German fair will be held from 𝟏𝟎 𝐭𝐨 𝟏𝟐 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 and will once again see 𝐈𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲 as the protagonist, with over 1,190 registered exhibitors, although down compared to previous editions; followed by France (743) and Germany (708). WD Bordeaux 100, the largest market index available for Bordeaux wines (100 wines over 14 vintages, 2 Billion Euros) decreased by 0.8% in March 2024, by 1.4% in 2024, and by 7.6% over the past year. The WD Bordeaux 1CC of the top 10 crus saw a significant decrease of 11.8% over the year. Lafite Rothschild fell by 15% over the same period, while Carruades de Lafite dropped by 16.2%. Other regions are also affected by this structural decline. The level of B2B offers in the Wine Decider database reached a new record at 1.480 billion euros. As the global bulk wine market seems to be normalising since the start of the year, after a challenging 2023; it is now time to book and benefit from EB rates for the #worldbulkwineexhibition 2024.

The PM Spirits team had the privilege to chat with spirits expert Alexandre Vingtier who schooled us on Calvados. Amongst many other things, his explanation of how "traveling distillers"/"ambulant distillers" hold a special place in the Normandie region was quite eye opening: Unlike Cognac - and to some degree Armagnac - which are primarily commercial products, Calvados holds a more dual identity: it is both a commercial product and a personal, family-crafted spirit, making it not just a product but a part of daily life and tradition in Normandy where Calvados is made. In the region, ambulant distillers are still a thing: currently, there are 36 active such traveling distillers, to compare with 3 in Armagnac (and none in Cognac, at least to my own knowledge). That's mostly because while Normandy hosts around 400 registered commercial producers within the Calvados appellation, there are approximately three times as many farms producing cider spirits for personal use. These smaller operations may not be officially recognized within the appellation, but they contribute significantly to the local culture. The spirits produced on these farms are non-commercial endeavors. Although technically not "Calvados", these distillates are cherished locally and known as "cider spirits" or affectionately termed "calva", highlighting the stuff's everyday presence, often enjoyed at the end of a meal or with coffee and embodying a sense of local heritage and community.

Top 5 most traded wine labels by value on Liv-ex in 2023: 1.  Chateau Lafite Rothschild Premier Cru Classe 2.  Petrus, Pomerol 3.  Chateau Mouton Rothschild Premier Cru Classe 4.  Louis Roederer, Cristal 5.  Dom Perignon

Interesting to see the most traded wines by value on the Liv-Ex exchange last year. Trading value is a function of price and number of trades. All the producers on the list are well known brands within the luxury segment. Also important to note the top 5 names reside in either Bordeaux or Champagne, the two most "liquid" regions in fine wine. Looking at supply, Petrus has a production of circa 27,000 bottles each vintage and sits at number 2 on the list vs Dom Perignon which produces circa 5,000,000 bottles each vintage, positioned at number 5. The value of fine wine is determined by brand, quality and supply. These three factors are interlinked.
