Only 2⃣8⃣ % of engineering students are young women. As International Women in Engineering Day took place yesterday, let's remember that skills and values know no gender! 👷♀️👩🔧👩💻 In 2022, VINCI Construction launched the Equality program, promoting inclusion and gender parity through a core of joint actions: 🎓The Master Class Recruitment trains our HR teams to write more inclusive job postings, and identify biases in selection and interviews. 🤝Our partnership with Elles bougent inspires more young girls to become engineers or technicians. Plus, we guide 700 future engineers from ESTP in exploring our industry. 🎙Our internal Coaching Programs empower women leaders to grow, while the mYXt Network fosters discussions on professional equality. A huge thanks to all our colleagues and partners who make these initiatives successful and drive us towards more #EqualityInConstruction! June 23 is International Women in Engineering Day #INWED24, an opportunity to highlight the important contributions that women make in their communities through their engineering work. INWED underscores that a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive profession improves the quality of engineering work and its impact. Engineers Canada is leading a country-wide initiative to bring greater gender equity to engineering. At the forefront of our efforts is #30by30: the engineering profession’s goal to see 30 per cent of newly licensed engineers be women by 2030. As we celebrate INWED, we also reflect on the work that still needs to be done to advance gender equity in engineering. At our annual 30 by 30 Conference in May, we looked back at the first decade of 30 by 30, and considered how we can apply those lessons learned in our next steps. Read more about 30 by 30 and our continued commitment to fostering an inclusive environment in engineering: https://lnkd.in/gTGy7Bpv #engineers #engineering #equity #diversity #inclusion #womeninengineering

Yesterday, we celebrated International Women in Engineering Day. Did you know women make up only 17% of civil engineers? This is a significant increase from roughly 3.5% in 1980, but there is still a long way to go for equal representation in the field. At JCE, we recognize the immense value of gender diversity in driving our innovative capabilities, which is why we are proud to have achieved an equal male/female team as of this summer. Our commitment to balanced representation will remain an integral part of our growth strategy, and we will continue to support organizations like the Society of Women Engineers that empower women in their engineering studies and professional careers. #INWED24 #EnhancedByEngineering (Data source: Society of Women Engineers, https://lnkd.in/g3aZzQp5)

August has been declared Women’s Month by the South African governments and the month highlights the plights and triumphs of women in South Africa. This year’s theme is #WhatWomenWant and focuses on promoting gender equality for a sustainable future. Let's celebrate our woman engineers. Where are South Africa’s Women Engineers? With over half of undergraduate degrees in science, engineering, and technology (SET) awarded to women (see image posts), we would expect similar rates of representation among engineering professionals. However, according to the latest report from the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), less than a quarter of candidate engineers (whose roles are equivalent to Engineers in Training, EITs) are women. As the image post shows, this representation only becomes more abysmal among professional engineers, where only 6% of professional engineers are women. Indeed, this shows that although there seems to be gender parity in engineering college degree attainment, this does not necessarily translate to gender parity in the engineering workforce. #ecengineering #womansday #womansday2023 #whatwomanwant #womanindustry Source: https://lnkd.in/g-4yN29J

According to the UN, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which was yesterday, is an opportunity to promote full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls. Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls is crucial to economic development. For women to develop, progress, become empowered, and thrive economically and socially, it is essential that more women are given access to ICT and STEM related careers and sectors. Research has shown that women are underrepresented in these sectors, both in South Africa and globally. Today, we look specifically at women in the engineering sector in South Africa. Did you know that only 6% of professional engineers in South Africa are women? Data from the 2021 annual report from the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) shows the stark gender gap in engineering. Women make up 23% of candidate engineers, or engineers in training, and just 5% of candidate-certificate engineers. This shows a dire need to support more women in the sector. International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) is an annual event that celebrates the achievements of women in engineering worldwide, inspiring the next generation of female engineers, and promoting diversity and inclusivity in the engineering field. While events like International Women in Engineering Day are essential for recognizing the achievements of women and raising awareness of their contributions, the challenges they face in the field such as gender pay gap, lack of representation in leadership positions and potential burnouts still persist and require further attention. On the other hand, it seems that having a separate day for women engineers reinforces the stereotypes about women's abilities in engineering fields and the idea that they are a minority or "others" in the field, rather than simply being engineers like their male colleagues. It's important to consider the intentions behind having a day like INWED and whether it truly promotes gender equality or reinforces gender-based discrimination. Nevertheless, thank you for breaking down barriers, forging new paths, and paving the way for future generations of women and "Happy International Women in Engineering Day!”. WOMEN IN ENGINEERING DAY 2024 J.V Tierney proudly supports and encourages diversity, gender equality, and female representation in the workplace. To celebrate Women in Engineering Day 2024, we caught up with Paula Murphy, one of our female engineers, to discuss her experience in the male-dominated engineering industry. In school Paula was drawn to science and maths and the mechanics of how things work, and this led her to a career in engineering. Paula’s favourite part of her job is that every day is different, and that she gets to work with different people on interesting projects. While we are seeing a trend in the construction industry whereby women are stepping into previously male-dominated roles and leading the charge towards a more gender-balanced future, there is still room for improvement. On this, Paula says that “imposter syndrome can be a challenge when you are the only woman in a room full of men.” In order to progress the industry to new heights and inspire a future generation of engineers, a gender balanced workforce is essential. Paula’s advice to the younger generation of women is that “Engineering is for everyone. Don’t let the gender imbalance put you off!” With more women like Paula entering the field of engineering each year, we are on the path towards a more fair, balanced, and sustainable future.
