Creating a rich seaweed bed and blue carbon, this project implemented at Kansai international airport in Japan (KIX) has received a sustainability award (platinum), from the Airports Council International - ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East. Offshore airport operated by VINCI Airports and its partner ORIX Group since 2016, KIX has been actively working to create a seaweed bed environment that provides a habitat for marine life in harmony with the marine environment since the development plan of the airport. The gently sloping rubble mound seawalls used for most of the seawalls allow light to reach a wide area, making it easy for seaweed to grow. Efforts to plant seaweed and preserving it by continuously monitoring the status have resulted in the creation of a rich seaweed bed environment, leading to the diversity of the marine ecosystem. Congratulations for this international recognition of VINCI Airports’ commitment to preserve natural environment and to reduce carbon emission. #airport #biodiversity #solutionsforenvironment #positivemobility #KIX Kansai Airports

On 18-19 April 2024, TULIPS participated in the ICAO Seminar on Green Airports in Athens Greece with the ambition to get into contact with relevant stakeholders, promote TULIPS outputs and to understand to what extend the European dimension of sustainable airport operation resonates with the global view represented from ICAO and its members. Through out the conference it became evident, that the "European dimension" must be understood as a regional interpretation of a global challenge to aviation. Within this scope, however, the EU is experiencing a significant pull effect from the #European_Green_Deal regulation and accountable institutions like ACI EUROPE with the capacity to facilitate its implementation in the aviation sector. Listening to the ambitions ahead leaves the impression that European Airports are is finding their way into a leading role for driving the change locally but also with a radiating effect on the aviation sector at large. The seminar left no doubt that airports around the world are looking to master the #clean_energy_transition with the overarching goal to reach net-zero emission from airport operations by 2050 at the latest. Besides terminal and ground service operations, also flying with #SAF and alternative propulsion system mark a part of the transition promoted by the International Civil Aviation Organization during the event. For all these development items, however, regulatory and infrastructure adjustments are to be solved while financing the transition has its own peculiar set of challenges for airport operators and airlines alike. The main technical subjects discussed were hydrogen ; SAF, sustainable energy and circularity to reduce waste and emissions at airports. These subjects were supportend by policy, infrastructure and resilience requirements . The aviation sector is still at a distance from becoming fully sustainable yet there is a committed pathway and emissions are already measured and reported transparently. So the question will be how quickly innovation and implementation could make it a reality. To this end the Projects from the Green Airports Cluster including TULIPS – Green Airports, OLGA Project, Stargate - EU Green Deal and ALIGHT are finding themselves in an important position to provide part of the European answer to this question. It is for this reason, that they received quite a bit of recognition for their work at various occasions of the conference. Find out how: https://lnkd.in/eJVbhz4P

Following MSC Euribia’s landmark net-zero GHG emission maiden voyage from Saint Nazaire, France to Copenhagen, Denmark, between 3 and 8 June 2023 – including one day in Amsterdam –, MSC Cruises is now able to share the key data and insights gathered from the journey. During the four-day voyage, MSC Euribia performed 11% better than her digital twin – a virtual ship reproducing the optimum energy flow and utilisation on board - achieving an overall saving of 43 tonnes of fuel. Optimal speed profiles, routing, trim and engine configuration, and strict optimisation of the hotel`s energy consumption, including HVAC, galleys, and lightings, ensured that MSC Euribia never had to use more than two of its four engines available during the voyage. In addition, all the required heat for galleys, heating systems and hot water on board was recovered from MSC Euribia’s engines, meaning there was no need to utilise the boilers for the entire voyage. #msccruises #msceuribia #sustainability #sustainabletourism

[#Electrification of river #vessels] The transformation of river transportation towards zero-emissions is gaining momentum, and Actemium is a key player driving this change. Read the story on Agility Effect! https://lnkd.in/eG69s8NZ
Vedettes de Paris, an operator of tourist boats on the Seine, has appointed Actemium Marine to upgrade its fleet of five vessels to use electric engines🔌 🎯The aim? To achieve a 50% reduction in carbon footprint for this year. In February, the first 100% electric-propulsion vessel was inaugurated, the Paris-Trocadéro🛳️ The electrification of each boat will avoid 460 tonnes CO2 equivalent per year🌱 “This is the first transformation of its kind on a sightseeing cruise vessel of this size,” says Bruno LIBERT, Business Unit Manager at Actemium Marine Fluvial Carrying out these types of projects shows that decarbonization of maritime transport is not limited to large cruise ships, supertankers, and giant container ships but also extends to urban environments. 🏙️ Learn more from the project👉https://shorturl.at/5Vvzz #AgilityEffect

Group Head of Sustainability @daa plc / Climate Professional / Sustainability Thought Leader / Public Policy / Infrastructure / Speaker
This post gives a great breakdown of what we discussed so you can skip to the good parts :-)
Three principles are guiding daa’s approach to sustainability: decarbonisation, circularity, and enhancing local environments. 1️⃣ In their decarbonisation efforts, daa is not solely fixated on new technologies, like integrating solar panel farms. It is also keen on enhancing the efficiency and prolonging the lifespan of its current infrastructure, including boilers. 2️⃣ The principle of circularity in their operations underscores the reduction of waste, notably highlighted in their initiatives to segregate waste at security checkpoints. The recycling rates at these security lanes catapulted from a mere 10% to an impressive 70-80%! 3️⃣ Beyond these initiatives, there’s a recognition of the profound impact airports have on local environments, spanning from noise pollution to biodiversity implications. A proactive engagement with local communities has been deemed indispensable to understand and alleviate these environmental effects. In today's episode of our ‘Sustainability in the Air’ podcast, Shashank Nigam ✈ speaks with Andrea Carroll, Group Head of Sustainability at daa, about how the airport group is fostering a climate-positive culture that promotes sustainability as a shared responsibility. Here are the key highlights of the conversation: 💚 Introduction to daa (3:33) 💚 Sustainability objectives for daa and Dublin Airport (7:07) 💚 Planning for sustainable infrastructure and dealing with Scope 3 emissions (10:04) 💚 Three driving principles (16:36) 💚 Enabling cultural change and climate literacy in a complex organisation (19:42) 💚 Sustainability Ambassadors programme (22:05) 💚 Balancing growth and sustainability (27:57) 💚 Preparing for the future (35:52) 💚 Dealing with climate activists (38:50) 💚 Rapid fire!
