VINCI Airports’ network continues to decarbonize its operations: in Cambodia, Phnom Penh (VINCI Airports/VINCI Concessions) reached Level 3, “Optimization”, on the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme; in Mexico, the 13 airports operated by OMA were awarded Level 2, “Reduction”, only 10 months after Level 1. In line with VINCI Airports’ environmental policy and its aim to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, the airports in Mexico have taken several concrete measures including installation of solar panels, which engender 18% of the electricity the airports consume in a year, while introducing innovative batteries enabling them to utilize the energy over longer periods of time. Phnom Penh airport’s Level 3 accreditation, “Optimization”, attests that it has engaged third parties in efforts to truncate its carbon footprint (airlines and accommodation providers including independent ground handling companies, catering companies, air traffic controllers and other organizations active in the airport). VINCI Airports is the first international contributor to Airports Council International (ACI)’s ACA programme with 51 accredited airports, including four at the top level, ACA 5, in Portugal and France.

How airports can move to net zero carbon emissions? Our team undertook the first monitoring visit to Cabo Verde Airports as Lender’s Technical Advisor’s to monitor the progress of the works and meet with CVA's project delivery team to discuss the planning of the works. In July 2023 VINCI Airports, alongside their Portuguese subsidiary ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal, SA finalised the financial arrangements for the acquisition of 7 airports in Cabo Verde under a 40-year Concession Agreement. The initial development projects include ICAO compliance works at the 4 international airports, and improvement of passenger experience and general ambiance. The works are being part funded through a Sustainability-Linked Financing (SLF) Framework by IFC, Proparco and DEG. This is one of VINCI Airports' very first financing arrangements of this kind, and the first time IFC, Proparco and DEG have financed airports through a SLF. To secure SLF certification, it set two sustainability targets: one involving a progressive reduction in CO2 emissions, the other involving the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. The 2024 International Civil Aviation Organization Seminar on Green Airports, was held from 18 to 19 April 2024 in Athens, Greece. The objective of the Seminar was to increase awareness of all interested parties on the emerging topics associated with airports, with a specific focus on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (#SAF), Lower Carbon Aviation Fuels (LCAF) and other Aviation Cleaner Energies, including sustainable infrastructure, to enable the energy transition at airports. On 18-19 April 2024, TULIPS participated in the ICAO Seminar on Green Airports in Athens Greece with the ambition to get into contact with relevant stakeholders, promote TULIPS outputs and to understand to what extend the European dimension of sustainable airport operation resonates with the global view represented from ICAO and its members. Through out the conference it became evident, that the "European dimension" must be understood as a regional interpretation of a global challenge to aviation. Within this scope, however, the EU is experiencing a significant pull effect from the #European_Green_Deal regulation and accountable institutions like ACI EUROPE with the capacity to facilitate its implementation in the aviation sector. Listening to the ambitions ahead leaves the impression that European Airports are is finding their way into a leading role for driving the change locally but also with a radiating effect on the aviation sector at large. The seminar left no doubt that airports around the world are looking to master the #clean_energy_transition with the overarching goal to reach net-zero emission from airport operations by 2050 at the latest. Besides terminal and ground service operations, also flying with #SAF and alternative propulsion system mark a part of the transition promoted by the International Civil Aviation Organization during the event. For all these development items, however, regulatory and infrastructure adjustments are to be solved while financing the transition has its own peculiar set of challenges for airport operators and airlines alike. The main technical subjects discussed were hydrogen ; SAF, sustainable energy and circularity to reduce waste and emissions at airports. These subjects were supportend by policy, infrastructure and resilience requirements . The aviation sector is still at a distance from becoming fully sustainable yet there is a committed pathway and emissions are already measured and reported transparently. So the question will be how quickly innovation and implementation could make it a reality. To this end the Projects from the Green Airports Cluster including TULIPS – Green Airports, OLGA Project, Stargate - EU Green Deal and ALIGHT are finding themselves in an important position to provide part of the European answer to this question. Italy set to play a key role in leading the process of decarbonizing air transport. How? According to transport infrastructure group Mundys, Italy is set to play a key role in leading the process of decarbonizing air transport as part of the World Economic Forum initiative that will focus on how to transform airports into “Energy Hubs”. These hubs will be capable of producing, storing and distributing clean energy, and facilitating the large-scale deployment of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), using advanced technologies and innovative financing tools. The role of Italy’s Mundys is to act as the corporate leader to head the “Financing the Airports of Tomorrow”, the cornerstone of the initiative launched by the World Economic Forum and Airports Council International. The initiative aims to identify industrial solutions and hybrid forms of financing that can accelerate airports’ green transition and enable them to achieve net zero by 2050. The initiative has attracted the participation of some of the world’s leading intercontinental airports, including Aeroporti di Roma, Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur, London Heathrow, Dubai, Hong Kong, Dallas Fort Worth. VINCI Airports paves the way for sustainable growth The world's leading private airport operator, VINCI Airports has finalised financial arrangements for the acquisition of seven airports in Cabo Verde. This cements the operator's international network, now spanning 72 airports in 13 countries. The €60 million in financing under the Sustainability-Linked Financing (SLF) Framework is the first time IFC - International Finance Corporation World Bank, Proparco and DEG have financed airports through a SLF.
