Health and Safety Leader | Chartered Engineer | Energy Transition Facilitator | Offshore Operations | Security & Resilience | Aviation Safety | Mentor | Board Member - SPE Aberdeen!
Yesterday morning I awoke to the shocking pictures and video showing the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. The vulnerability of structures to impact loads was laid starkly before us in this tragedy which is assumed to have taken six lives. The increase in size of container ships in the last 50 years is mirrored with offshore installation supply boats where impact energies have the potential to be significant. In offshore energies this increase in risk has been known for some time and is managed effectively using a suite of industry standards, training and documentation, from Offshore Energies UK Ship / Installation Collision Risk Avoidance guidance currently being refreshed in collaboration with Marine Safety Forum, Step Change in Safety Marine Operations: 500m safety zone guidelines, and OPITO global training standards on Safety zones. Nevertheless learning from other incidents outside of our sector remains important and encourages our continued vigilance. #baltimore #francisscottkey #bridgecollapse #marinesafety #safetyzones #collisionavoidance #collisionriskmanagement #collisionriskavoidance #crossindustrylearning #incidentinvestigation

Discover the epic tale of Texas's colossal new Harbor Bridge, initially set to be one of America's longest cable-stayed bridges. Safety concerns and budget overruns halted construction halfway through. Investigations uncovered five major issues, including foundation problems and design flaws. Engineers are now extending foundations, reinforcing connections, and addressing uplift challenges. They're also balancing equipment against high winds and coping with unexpected setbacks like crane fires. This project serves as a poignant reminder of the construction industry's responsibility to ensure safety and create lasting infrastructure. #HarborBridge #InfrastructureChallenges #EngineeringSolutions https://lnkd.in/ewWDf9Je

CRC Walrus and CRC Vulcan working together yesterday carrying out drills for amphibious recovery. Drills include recovering CRC Walrus from sand in the event of hydraulics failure using CRC Vulcan to tow her off. To establish the tow we use a rocket line thrower, once fired the line is attached to the CRC Walrus dyneema recovery line which is then pulled to the towing vessel, in this case CRC Vulcan. The wheels on Walrus are set into freewheel mode and the vessel is towed from the sand back into the water. Thorough RAMs and procedures are in place for these circumstances but there is nothing like actually using the equipment and training to ensure safety for both crews and vessels. #SafetyFirst #saftey #training #Rams #safteydrills #amphibious #windfarm #CTV #vesselrecovery #offshorelife #offshorewind #offshorewindenergy #OffshoreWindPower

𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 – 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐆𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐄-24 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐫𝐢𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥 #Dive into the heart of the Erie #Canal with one of McLaren’s marine inspection teams: Spenser Wigsten, P.E., Kevin Valente, and Nathan Shields, as they conduct a routine inspection of the Lock E-24 guard gate in Baldwinsville, #NewYork! Scaling two 45-ft. steel-frame towers, the team performed a structural and mechanical assessment of the gate, documenting observed conditions and capturing alignment data through laser measurements. Following the inspection, the team will submit a report summarizing major findings, element-specific technical summaries, general condition ratings, and a prioritized list of recommended maintenance items. This type of inspection and reporting is vital to the client, as it guides them in creating an approach to maintain the structural integrity and smooth operation of the guard gate. Guard gates serve a crucial function in the canal system, regulating water flow between the canal’s open (navigation) season and throughout the closed winter (non-navigation) season. These structures also serve as a built-in emergency response system for the New York State Canal Corporation (NYSCC), who will raise or lower the gates to mitigate the effects of flooding. Conducting routine #StructuralInspections and delivering informed guidance on asset management strategies are essential services that McLaren provides to support safe operation of the Erie Canal and to help preserve this historic navigational #waterway. Follow along as Spenser shares his birds-eye view, alongside Nathan and Kevin, of the Lock E-24 guard gate south tower in the video below.

Last week we ran into a tough one which usually happens when we are close to home. The hard jobs make us better yet test the team at the same time. None of our guys like it when a job goes longer than planned. It is a blow the ego when they get the call asking how it is going and they have to say not well. Here’s what I see. 1. By – Pass Pumping -- Can always be challenging. 2. Vac trucks – High chance to break down. 3. 35’ deep – Lots of Corrosion and way more infiltration. 4. The CREW - These guys are killers. We don’t have a “young people don’t want to work” issue here. Our team as a whole is men who show up and go to work to serve the communities we work with. These individuals work hard on every job putting in the effort to repair and rehabilitate our countries infrastructures. Advanced Rehabilitation Technology Kenneth Fish Wyatt Short Logan Clemens
