Leveraging connectedness, empathy, harmony, being a developer, and belief as a high-impact higher education administrator and student affairs professional.
Here, I represent myself. I am a graduate student and a University of Southern California (USC) employee. Below, I share my thoughts, and they do not represent those of my university or employer. Like many, I have been feeling disappointed, sad, and regretful after USC Valedictorian Asna Tabassum's opportunity to address the university's graduates was taken from her. It is disheartening to see our USC Unifying Values, which include a commitment to 'value different experiences, cultures, identities, and perspectives' and 'courageously engage in uncomfortable conversations,' contradicted by the Provost's decision. I am sad that USC student leaders, staff, and faculty who were external to the Provost's decision are now tasked with damage control on campus tours, residence halls, classrooms, and now, thanks to the media, beyond USC. I regret trusting a system that would ultimately collapse upon itself in this way, believing that words would translate to action. I also regret thinking that, for some reason, this would be different from previous campus controversies. Still, I remain committed to avoiding disposability as an emerging higher education administrator and student affairs professional. USC must do right by Asna and all students who are under undue fire for their orientations around justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. I call on USC's leadership to reinstate Asna Tabassum's address and embrace USC's Unifying Value of open communication. What happened is unfair and unjust and is an affront to the very mission of the university. Let Asna Speak! #USC #USCTrojans #USCCommencement #USCGrad #USC2024 #FightOn

Only a couple of years into our work, the NISS is starting to see impressive outcomes for our partner institutions. The initial group of NISS client universities—in Kansas, Texas, Georgia, Michigan, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Maryland—have averaged a 3.53-point improvement in retention rates, outpacing the national average improvement (of 0.8 point) by more than four times! Across the more than 1.2 million students currently enrolled at NISS institutions, this improvement in student progression translates into roughly 42,000 more students staying enrolled in college every year. Special congratulations to the campus teams at Pittsburg State University (KS) and Albany State University (GA) for achieving gains in retention rates of 15 and 10 points, respectively. Our NISS partners are doing the hard work of scaling data-informed improvements to their student support systems--and transforming lives by the thousands! #NISS #studentsuccess #highered #data #retentionrates #studentretention
