The UK Commission on Bereavement shows 39% of bereaved people report difficulties in getting support from friends or family. How can you support someone who is grieving? 👂 Listen: Offer your presence and listen without judgement. ✋ Be Patient: Allow them to grieve at their own pace. 🤝 Offer Practical Help: Help with daily tasks or errands. 👀 Check In Regularly: Show you care by staying in touch. 💚 Respect Their Feelings: Validate their emotions without trying to fix them. For #worldmentalhealthday2023 I have a question for you. Did you know there is such a thing as cumulative (or compound) grief? It can occur when grieving is interrupted, delayed or compounded by a new loss. I wasn't aware of it until very recently, and it turns out that it may well be the root cause of my anxiety - and is something I'm currently working through with a counsellor from the bereavement charity Cruse. Anybody might experience cumulative grief, but I suspect from my experience that it is particularly applicable to those in, or retired from, careers in the military, emergency services and other sectors where the loss of a friend or colleague is not uncommon, and where the pace of daily activity might distract a person from working through the grief from one death before another occurs (the 1991 Gulf War, in my case). The Cruse website https://lnkd.in/euR37A53 has some really good resources explaining the many physical ways grief might affect a person, and tips on dealing with it. Take a look if you think you might be experiencing cumulative grief.

🌟 Let's talk bereavement. How can we nurture compassion within a context of loss and grief 💙🤝 When a co-worker is experiencing bereavement, our support can make a world of difference. 🌈✨ Here's how you can offer comfort: Express Sincere Condolences: A heartfelt message or card lets them know you care. Offer Practical Assistance: Help with tasks to ease their workload during this difficult time. Create a Safe Space: Allow them to share their feelings when they're ready; lend a compassionate ear. See what their need is and let that guide you: Respect that a person may need space while others might be yearning to talk about the loved one whom they lost. Observe and listen with an open heart. Extend Flexibility: Understand the need for flexibility in their work responsibilities. Initiate Small Acts of Kindness: Thoughtful gestures, like bringing them a comforting snack, can provide solace. Check-In Regularly: Consistent support is key. Regularly check in, even if it's just a brief message. Remember, a little kindness goes a long way in healing hearts. 💕🌟 #psychologyinpractice #SupportInGrief #CompassionateWorkplace #GriefSupport #PsychologyOfEmpathy #TogetherWeHeal 🌸🤗

Last week, Harmless's own Helen Birch led a beautiful session on post-traumatic growth at our suicide bereavement conference. It was touching and powerful, also representing a very 'full circle' moment for Helen. She attended our suicide bereavement conference a number of years ago as a delegate, and this year presented as a expert speaker. 🔊Some key messages for anyone who has lost someone to suicide🔊 👏There is a legacy passed on after someone has died. This legacy is not a narrative set in stone. It is your journey to write. 👏Feel what you feel. You don't have to pretend, as long as you are supported. 👏It is ok to want, need and accept support. We have to self-care AND be cared for. 👏People should not forgive themselves for things they are not responsible for. Hard when you've lost someone, but crucial to remember it is not your fault. 👏We cannot heal through avoidance. Though this is a powerful, expected and common human response, it sustains everything, especially feelings of shame. 👏You can learn to live again, and even thrive. #hope #recovery #postvention #suicide #support
