Exciting News in the World of Space Technology! The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded Lockheed Martin a groundbreaking research and development contract. This contract will enable Lockheed Martin to provide a secure, open-source ground-segment software solution to task, monitor, and control the U.K.'s future space capabilities. Known as the BEROE program, this initiative will play a crucial role in helping the MOD effectively control its upcoming ISTARI constellation of low orbit general-purpose Earth observation satellites. This development is a significant step forward in the U.K.'s ongoing efforts to enhance multi-domain integration. Interesting insights here related to integrated systems in the past for space C2 that have not been entirely successful and the pivot to R2C2. I do wonder if at some point the effort to create a "one size fits all" solution is no longer worth it. Operators are smart and can adapt and learn new systems pretty quickly. Maybe the right answer is just to establish a baseline set of capabilities for each C2 system. Let them be different and stop worrying about having everything on one platform, effectively creating an SRD/IRD for space C2. A lot of money has already been thrown at this problem with little return.

Space Force taps four firms for laser network project  - Blue Origin, CACI International, General Atomics, and Viasat will design optical communications terminals for military spacecraft -  The Space Systems Command (SSC) announced it has awarded contracts to four companies to develop prototypes for laser communication terminals, kicking off the first phase of a $100 million program dubbed Enterprise Space Terminal. - Blue Origin, CACI International, General Atomics, and Viasat will compete to design and prototype optical communications terminals for use in space. These terminals essentially function like high-powered modems, using lasers to transmit and receive data over vast distances at the speed of light. - The goal of the Enterprise Space Terminal project, overseen by SSC’s Space Domain Awareness and Combat Power Program Executive Office, is to establish a space mesh network across various orbits — from low Earth orbit to beyond geosynchronous. As I noted in my last article, a major motivation for DoD organizations to migrate to contemporary Digital Engineering approaches is to enable every step and org in the DoD acquisition process to keep pace with the rapid pace of technological change. This is perhaps most visible in the pivot of space acquisition organizations like the Space Development Agency (SDA) away from 15-25 year satellite lifetimes to 5-7 year lifetimes with commensurate compressions in the development and manufacturing timelines. https://lnkd.in/gdk8HPhv
