Ironic, isn't it......that the time when you, a leader, need concepts like purpose, or core pillars of organisation differentiation like values or the defined culture the most...is also the time when those principles come under attack. Why would that be? What's the alternative agenda? That discord is the loudest signal you'll get that you need to double down on your inclusive development effort and accelerate your organisation development and engagement strategy. Most of our leadership coaching discussions at the moment seem to involve three key concerns: - leadership and management clashes across generations - hiring and retention challenges - resilience and sustaining performance (at all levels). These are tough times. There are leadership crises everywhere you turn. So it's hardly surprising. Scratch the surface and in many of these situations: a) there's a lack of clarity about the organisation's true purpose and innate character, sending out weak, mixed and generic signals b) they're looking for the wrong people in the right places c) there's no golden thread between the organisation's strategy, goals and individual accountabilities Every business has a story, a narrative that should be shared and owned. It needs to look back as well as forward and should act as a beacon for like minds and also attract those who can see the potential ahead and help the leaders get there. Whatever the state of the recruitment market, retention and development of your champions is within your gift as leaders. You have agency. Stop expecting external forces and the market to bring you the answers. Cultivate the capability within and start by reminding yourself and those that truly matter, why you're in business at all. What matters and what must happen next will suddenly become a lot more apparent.

Definitely the #1 item for all strategies is the purpose at the core , whether business or not, right “core purpose” selection will make things magical .

Such a powerful article. "Leaders need to think hard about how to make purpose central to their strategy. The two best tactics for doing that are to transform the leadership agenda and to disseminate purpose throughout the organization."

The first question I ask a new client is this: "What is your business striving to improve on or provide to your chosen market that no one else can or will?" Very often, we have a lengthy conversation before arriving at a specific answer on what the business does and for whom. This is sometimes even true for organizations that have a #mission, #vision and #values statements. We start with the purpose question as, whatever the answer, it's essential for defining WHAT people in your organization need to do. Also, HOW all levels of employees are supposed to do their work so that customers (and others impacted by your business) are satisfied to the measure your business aims to please them. These are some of my favourite conversations with #Owners and #CEOs and their leadership teams. There are so many interesting and inspiring founder stories and how companies have shifted and expanded over the time since they've started. It also allows us to move into a conversation about where the company is going next. Knowing the answer to that is important both for creating job definitions and assessing where people need to be developed for the company's and their own continuing evolution. Meandering Mondays with Water (ep 36)   How do we activate and empower internal stakeholders on water more effectively?   More recently I have been spending my time thinking about how to be more effective in engaging employees on water. Employees occupy different roles within an organization with some having a greater potential to contribute towards a company’s water strategy but nonetheless – they are an important internal stakeholder. However, I have been spending time thinking about how to activate employees through “engagement” more strategically. This means these sessions don’t default to becoming dull “This is water and why it is important, and what you can do is to make sure you turn off the taps you use” but rather into something more like “Here is a framework to broaden your understanding of how water is connected to our business and how your role connects into this”. This is with the hope that they walk away feeling more empowered to propose creative and more impactful solutions (that they can influence through their day-to-day roles) that contribute toward strategic water goals.   Employees are just one group of internal stakeholders that are critical to mobilizing on water (but also other sustainability issues).
